Amazon's Cloud Drive Photos for Android gets autosave feature, additional functionality

Despite being a little too busy scooping up companies and striking new streaming deals, Amazon hasn't exactly been overlooking its set of mobile and desktop applications. Most recently, the online retail behemoth announced a refresh was on hand for Cloud Drive Photos on Android, providing users of said app with an auto-save option that, as you likely guessed, allows pics to be automatically uploaded to ones cloud account -- this, according to Amazon, was "the most requested feature from our customers." Better yet, version 1.2 also brings camera integration to devices running Android 4.0.4 or later, which will make it easier for some folks to quickly snap a shot and save it to the cloud-based drive without too much effort. Other tidbits like multiple file downloads and uploads made it to this release as well, making for a pretty plentiful update overall -- links to download from Google Play or Amazon's own app store can be found down below.

Abbott results bode well for spun-off AbbVie

(Reuters) - AbbVie Inc , the new branded pharmaceuticals company spun off by Abbott Laboratories Inc , is off to a good start, judging by fourth-quarter sales of arthritis drug Humira and other products in its medicine chest.

The picture, although healthy, could be more challenging for the remaining Abbott, nicknamed "new Abbott," which continues to sell medical devices, diagnostics, nutritional products and generic drugs, said analysts.

The new Abbott said it expects earnings for 2013, excluding special items, of $1.98 to $2.04 per share, in line with its earlier guidance and above the average Wall Street forecast of $1.95.

The company has not yet provided complete earnings data for full-year 2012, making it difficult for investors to estimate how much earnings could grow in 2013. The company is still analyzing the numbers because of the split and may eventually restate some figures, analysts said.

Leerink Swann analyst Danielle Antalffy said comments by company executives during an investor conference call suggest Abbott sales may grow in the mid-single-digit percentage range this year, and that earnings would grow in the high-single-digit range.

But a big worry, Antalffy said, is whether Abbott can revive sales of its branded generic medicines, which the company calls established pharmaceuticals. Sales of the products slipped 4 percent in 2012 to $5.1 billion.

"The business, which represents 25 percent of company sales, has been underperforming," she said, adding that revenue forecasts for the business are difficult because they rely on data from so many local markets and countries.

Fourth-quarter sales of all products that remain with Abbott were $5.7 billion, roughly in line with analysts' forecasts. Although the company did not provide comparable sales figures for the fourth quarter of 2011, Antalffy estimated sales rose 4 to 5 percent in the most recent quarter.

Analysts said trends for AbbVie, based on more-detailed data for its products provided by Abbott on Wednesday, were easier to interpret.

Global sales of branded drugs that now belong to AbbVie rose 7.4 percent to $5.14 billion in the fourth quarter, topping the $4.8 billion estimate of Wells Fargo analyst Larry Biegelsen. The rise would have been 8.5 percent if not for the stronger dollar, which lowers the value of sales in overseas markets.

Sales of Humira, by far AbbVie's biggest product, jumped 23 percent to $2.68 billion, about $200 million above Biegelsen's estimate.

That represented a marked acceleration of sales growth from the prior two quarters and underscores how reliant AbbVie is on the injectable product, which is expected to become the world's top-selling medicine this year.

AbbVie, spun off by Abbott earlier this month, is expected to report its interpretation of the fourth-quarter results and its 2013 forecast on January 30.

Among top product lines still sold by Abbott, sales of nutritional brands jumped 10.2 percent to $1.71 billion in the fourth quarter, and sales of laboratory diagnostics grew 3.8 percent to $908 million. Sales of diabetes care products rose 3.1 percent to $362 million, reversing a 10 percent decline seen in the prior quarter.

Abbott shares were 0.3 percent lower in afternoon trading, while AbbVie shares rose 2.2 percent, both on the New York Stock Exchange.

Savvy Golf | Content for Reprint

Author: RoseannaLeaton | Total views: 375 Comments: 0
Word Count: 690 Date:

The key to playing savvy golf is to play to your strengths.? You, like me, will no doubt have played with golfers who insist on choosing the club and shot that they think should be played in a particular circumstance, irrespective of whether they are comfortable with that club or have indeed practiced that shot sufficiently to feel confident in its outcome.? That's not playing savvy golf.

?

?

The number one rule for the savvy golfer is to feel comfortable with the club that you have in your hand.? If it doesn't feel comfortable and imbue you with confidence then you cannot possibly commit to the shot.? Your intent and focus will be obliterated by your lack of comfort and your ball will quite likely shoot off along a very undesirable direction and trajectory.

?

?

There are many different ways in which to play each hole you encounter upon the golf course.? In reality you will most often find that so long as you make your wedges and putter into "happy clubs" you will score pretty well irrespective of what comes before.? I am of course speaking generally here.? But even if you choose to hit three shots with a seven iron to get near to your par 5 hole and then finish off with a chip and two putts you are playing safe bogey golf.

?

?

What I'm really getting at is that if you are standing on the tee box with your driver in hand and wondering in your own mind whether or not you can pull the shot off, you probably won't be able to do so.? If your ball is in an ugly position behind a bunch of trees and you can't see or haven't practiced a shot like the one that Bubba pulled off in the Masters, you probably won't be able to do it.

?

?

When you have a choice of potential shots to play, the best one, the savvy one, is the shot that you are at you are most comfortable with.? Someone else might be most comfortable with a 7 iron out of the rough but if you feel best with a 5 wood in your hands then that's the shot to play.? It doesn't matter what shot should be played.? What matters is that you are comfortable with the shot and you can see the shot in your minds eye.? Savvy golf is all about playing to your individual and unique strengths.

?

?

I am sure that you, like me, have heard your companion golfers commenting along the lines of "Don't know what's going to happen here so look out" as they set up to their ball.?? You, like me, have no doubt done the same yourself!? And we kick ourselves afterwards for being so stupid.? That's simply not playing savvy golf!

?

?

If you are around the green and a flop shot would be perfect, but you don't feel comfortable with that club or shot then don't attempt the shot.? Make a mental note to go practice it later so that you do feel comfortable next time.? In the meanwhile, choose the next best shot that you do feel comfortable with and play that one.? A chip onto the opposite side of the green and a two putt is better than a failed flop shot that digs you into a deeper hole and destroys your confidence and momentum at the same time.

?

?

Golf is a very mental game.? You have to think well, plan well, manage your expectations and accept outcomes.? Savvy golf is all about playing to your strengths.

Wallace: Wonders of nature have been solace of my life

Alfred Russel Wallace discovered natural selection independently of Charles Darwin. Through his letters, available online for the first time, he tells us of his research, expeditions and enduring fascination for nature's mysteries.

You are famously joint author, with Darwin, of the first paper describing the origin of species and natural selection, published in 1858. When did you first get the idea?
I begin [in 1847] to feel rather dissatisfied with a mere local collection ? little is to be learnt by it. I sh[ould]d like to take some one family, to study thoroughly ? principally with a view to the theory of the origin of species. By that means I am strongly of [the] opinion that some definite results might be arrived at.

This desire led you to Brazil to collect birds, butterflies and beetles to try to discover what drives the evolution of new species. Were there any incidents on the voyage?
On Friday the 6th of August [1852]? the Captain (who was the owner of the vessel) came into the cabin & said "I am afraid the ship's on fire. Come & see what you think of it."

Despite that harrowing experience, you next undertook an 8 year expedition to the Malay Archipelago, where you discovered the invisible boundary between the animals of Asia and the Australian region, which would later be called the Wallace Line in your honour. What fascinated you most on that trip?
The Birds have however interested me much more than the insects, they are proportionally much more numerous, and throw great light on the laws of Geographical distribution of Animals in the East? As an instance I may mention the Cockatoos, a group of birds confined to Australia & the Moluccas, but quite unknown in Java Borneo Sumatra & Malacca? Many other species illustrate the same fact.

You have been famously good-natured about sharing the discovery of natural selection with Darwin?
I also look upon it as a most fortunate circumstance that I had a short time ago commenced a correspondence with Mr. Darwin on the subject of "Varieties", since it has led to the earlier publication of a portion of his researches & has secured to him a claim to priority which an independent publication either by myself or some other party might have injuriously effected

What did you and Darwin have in common?
In early life both Darwin and myself became ardent beetle-hunters. Both Darwin and myself had, what he terms "the mere passion of collecting"? Now it is this superficial and almost child-like interest in the outward forms of living things, which, though often despised as unscientific, happened to be the only one which would lead us towards a solution of the problem of species.

Do you feel your contribution has been overlooked?
The idea came to me, as it had come to Darwin, in a sudden flash of insight: it was thought out in a few hours ? was written down with such a sketch of its various applications and developments? then copied on thin letter-paper and sent off to Darwin ? all within one week.

I should have had no cause for complaint if the respective shares of Darwin and myself in regard to the elucidation of nature's method of organic development had been thenceforth estimated as being, roughly, proportional to the time we had each bestowed upon it when it was thus first given to the world ? that is to say, as 20 years is to one week.

You helped Darwin with the puzzle of bright colouration in animals, which led to the concept of warning colours. To ask his question again, why are some caterpillars so brightly coloured?
[Since some]? are protected by a disagreeable taste or odour, it would be a positive advantage to them never to be mistaken for any of the palatable caterpillars? Any gaudy & conspicuous colour therefore, that would plainly distinguish them from the brown & green eatable caterpillars, would enable birds to recognise them easily as a kind not fit for food, & thus they would escape seizure which is as bad as being eaten.

How did you feel looking back on your life's work, at the age of 89?
The wonders of nature have been the delight and solace of? life. Nature has afforded? an ever increasing rapture, and the attempt to solve some of her myriad problems an ever-growing sense of mystery and awe.

Do you have a message for our readers?
I sincerely wish you all some of the delight in the mere contemplation of nature's mysteries and beauties which I have enjoyed.

UK's Blair feels "huge stab of anxiety" about EU referendum

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's pro-EU former Labour Prime Minister Tony Blair said on Wednesday he felt a "huge stab of anxiety" about the prospect of an in/out referendum on the European Union.

His Conservative successor David Cameron has pledged to give Britons a referendum choice on whether to stay in the EU if he wins an election in 2015.

Speaking from the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Blair told Sky TV that Britain's eventual exit from the EU was now on the agenda.

"The thing that sends a huge stab of anxiety through any of us that believe that Britain's place in the 21st Century has got to be as a key player in the largest political union, the biggest business market in the world, is that we're now putting on the table the prospect of Britain leaving Europe in a referendum in four or five years' time," he said.

"Why would we do that now? We don't know what the rest of Europe is going to propose by way of changes resulting from this euro crisis, we don't know yet the detail of what we're going to argue in Europe," he added.

"Surely what is better is to have that debate, try and shape the process in Europe and then decide where we are."

Blair said he agreed with Cameron when he said in a landmark speech earlier on Wednesday that reform was needed in Europe.

"Ninety percent of that speech is ... the British Prime Minister addressing the British national interest," he said.

"It's the climax to the speech (the referendum pledge) that I'm afraid is really about the internal European problem in the Conservative party and how they placate this UKIP party."

The Conservatives have long argued amongst themselves about whether Britain should be an EU member, a division eagerly exploited by the small but vociferous anti-EU UK Independence Party (UKIP) which is rising in opinion polls.

Blair added: "There's got to be a compelling reason to put that (referendum) question on the agenda. I don't see that compelling reason now."

Gigabit Internet Challenge: Taking Business To A Speedy Level

Slow Internet access is a real drag for the millions of Americans that don?t have ultra-fast browsing speeds. Internet speed has become such an issue that the FCC has promised it would fix it with the National Broadband Plan in 2010. Since then, there hasn?t been much progress made on the goal until now. During the recent U.S. Conference of Mayors Winter Meeting a challenge was issued by the FCC chairman.

Comments from the FCC issued in a press release:

During the U.S. Conference of Mayors Winter Meeting, FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski called for at least one gigabit community in all 50 states by 2015. Challenging broadband providers and state and municipal community leaders to come together to meet this ?Gigabit City Challenge,? Chairman Genachowski said that establishing gigabit communities nationwide will accelerate the creation of a critical mass of markets and innovation hubs with ultra-fast Internet speeds.

Chairman Genachowski said, ?American economic history teaches a clear lesson about infrastructure. If we build it, innovation will come. The U.S. needs a critical mass of gigabit communities nationwide so that innovators can develop next-generation applications and services that will drive economic growth and global competitiveness.?

Speeds of one gigabit per second are approximately 100 times faster than the average fixed high-speed Internet connection. At gigabit speeds, connections can handle multiple streams of large-format, high-definition content like online video calls, movies, and immersive educational experiences. Networks cease to be hurdles to applications, so it no longer matters whether medical data, high-definition video, or online services are in the same building or miles away across the state.

Gigabit communities spur innovators to create new businesses and industries, spark connectivity among citizens and services, and incentivize investment in high-tech industries. Today, approximately 42 communities in 14 states are served by ultra-high-speed fiber Internet providers, according to the Fiber to the Home Council.

To help communities meet the Gigabit City Challenge, Chairman Genachowski announced plans to create a new online clearinghouse of best practices to collect and disseminate information about how to lower the costs and increase the speed of broadband deployment nationwide, including to create gigabit communities. At the U.S. Conference of Mayors meeting, Chairman Genachowski proposed working jointly with the U.S. Conference of Mayors on the best-practices clearinghouse effort.

Chairman Genachowski also announced that the FCC will hold workshops on gigabit communities. The workshops will convene leaders from the gigabit community ecosystem?including broadband providers, and state and municipal leaders? to evaluate barriers, increase incentives, and lower the costs of speeding gigabit network deployment. Together, the workshops will inform the Commission?s clearinghouse of ways industry, and local and state leaders can meet the challenge to establish gigabit communities nationwide.

Communities across the country are already taking action to seize the opportunities of gigabit broadband for their local economies and bring superfast broadband to homes.? In Chattanooga, Tennessee, a local utility deployed a fiber network to 170,000 homes. Thanks to the city?s investment in broadband infrastructure, companies like Volkswagen and Amazon have created more than 3,700 new jobs over the past three years in Chattanooga. In Kansas City, the Google Fiber initiative is bringing gigabit service to residential consumers, attracting new entrepreneurs and startups to the community.

The Gig.U initiative has already catalyzed $200 million in private investment to build ultra-high-speed hubs in the communities of many leading research universities, including a recent joint venture with the University of Washington and a private ISP to deliver gigabit service to a dozen area neighborhoods in Seattle.? The Gigabit City Challenge is designed to drive a critical mass of gigabit communities like these, creating new markets for 21st century services, promoting competition, spurring innovation, and driving economic growth nationwide.

The FCC?s Broadband Acceleration Initiative is working to expand the reach of robust, affordable broadband by streamlining access to utility poles and rights of way, and improving policies for wireless facilities siting and other infrastructure. Gigabit communities can also benefit from tens of thousands of miles of critical ?middle mile? fiber infrastructure funded throughout the country by the Broadband Technology Opportunities Program run by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration. The Commission?s Connect America Fund, the largest ever public investment in rural broadband, includes funding for high-speed broadband to anchor institutions like schools and hospitals.

HBT: Who wants to sign?Valverde?

Now that he?s found a taker for Rafael Soriano on a heavily deferred deal, Scott Boras is trying to get teams interested in ex-Tigers closer Jose Valverde.

Valverde, 34, was 49-for-49 saving games for the Tigers in 2011 and 35-for-40 last season, but the postseason meltdown that saw him give up nine runs in 2 2/3 innings, combined with some declining peripherals from the regular season, has scared away seemingly every team this winter.

Boras knows he can?t use words to sweep away Valverde?s October struggles, but he does cite workload and fatigue as a possible reason for the sudden swoon. Counting the postseason, Valverde appeared in 81 games in 2011 and 75 last season.

?Closers normally have anywhere from 58 to 62 appearances and Valverde?s just had two years where he was used a lot,? Boras told George Sipple of the Detroit Free Press. ?It was a very unusual year this year, because he had so many non-save situations. He had like 31 of them, which normally they only have 17 or 18. So, it was a very unusual year.?

Those non-save situations are another thing working against Valverde this winter. He has a history ?of struggling without a save on the line, so contenders aren?t looking at him as a potential setup man.

Realistically, Valverde is going to have to settle for a cheap one-year deal with a chance to rebuild his value. If he?s willing to sign for $2 million or so, then maybe the Mets, Astros, Marlins or Twins could give him the chance to close. There?s certainly no reason to give him anything more than that, not with Brian Wilson, Francisco Rodriguez, Matt Capps, Jon Rauch and Francisco Cordero all sitting around waiting for phone calls, too.

Obama's Climate Change Goals Win Praise Abroad

* EU Commission, Australia PM among those praising Obama
* Obama may have best chances if he side-steps Congress
* New U.N. deal may take effect in 2020, too late for many
By Environment Correspondent Alister Doyle
OSLO, Jan 22 (Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama won praise abroad on Tuesday for his pledge to lead the fight against climate change, which has faltered as nations argue over who should foot the bill to lower carbon emissions.
Two decades of summits and resolutions have not stopped mankind pumping growing quantities of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, despite a wealth of evidence that it is causing more frequent and devastating droughts, storms and floods.
Obama devoted a surprisingly long section of Monday's inauguration speech to climate change -- more than a minute out of about 20. He said failure to respond to the threat "would betray our children and future generations."
"The path towards sustainable energy sources will be long and sometimes difficult. But America cannot resist this transition; we must lead it," he said.
"Great strong words on climate... The U.S. President could not commit stronger to delivering now," Connie Hedegaard, the European Union's climate commissioner, wrote on Twitter.
"We have got work to do on climate change and President Obama was very forthright about the need to tackle climate change," Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard told reporters.
A succession of recent natural disasters has put a sharper focus on climate change.
Superstorm Sandy struck the United States in October, a typhoon left more than 1,000 people dead or missing in the Philippines in December and this month a searing heatwave caused hundreds of wildfires in Australia.
The United States has declared a natural disaster in its central and southern Wheat Belt because of a severe and persistent drought.
The global economic slowdown has made the governments of richer nations more reluctant to invest in technology to mitigate climate change, led by a shift from fossil fuels towards clean energies such as wind or solar power.
Developing countries whose carbon emissions are rising fastest say they cannot afford the entire cost of shifting to greener technology and that developed nations should help more.
In the latest failure of environmental diplomacy, U.N. climate negotiations in Qatar in December ended without a single new pledge to cut pollution from a major emitter.
Instead, governments agreed to try again for a binding United Nations pact to limit climate change that would enter into force from 2020, replacing the Kyoto protocol adopted in 1997 that the United States never ratified.
Environmental campaigners were dismayed at the decision to wait years before taking concerted action.

SIDE-STEP CONGRESS
Obama's renewed promises could help.
"It really changes the nature, style and substance of the U.S. engagement with the international climate negotiations," said Bill Hare, a scientist who heads Berlin-based Climate Analytics.
He said that Washington, even in Obama's first term, had low ambitions for confronting climate change and that had dimmed efforts by other major emitters. China, the United States, India and Russia are the top greenhouse gas emitters.
Unlike all of Washington's major allies in developed nations, the U.S. Congress has not legislated caps on domestic greenhouse gas emissions.
But Obama can still take the lead with actions that side-step the divided Congress.
The administration could impose tougher rules for coal-fired power plants or introduce measures to promote renewables. It also faces a decision on whether to approve TransCanada Corp's planned $5.3 billion Canada-to-Nebraska Keystone XL oil pipeline.
"Words in an inauguration speech are one thing... Many are waiting to see what specific actions the president will take," said Samantha Smith, head of the WWF conservation group's climate and energy initiative.
She still praised Obama for starting a new U.S. debate about climate change with the speech. She said one measure Obama could take included a phase-out of fossil fuel subsidies.
When Obama first came to office he promised to act on climate change in a shift from ex-President George W. Bush who decided against trying to ratify the U.N.'s Kyoto Protocol for limiting emissions by industrialised nations.
In 2009, Obama promised to cut U.S. greenhouse gas emissions by 17 percent below 2005 levels by 2020. But the U.S. Senate did not ratify the plan.
Kyoto, originally backed by all other major developed nations, has been hit by defections by Russia, Canada and Japan from Jan. 1 this year, leaving only a core group led by the European Union and Canada targeting deeper cuts by 2020.
Bush and the U.S. Senate reckoned that Kyoto unfairly omitted targets for emerging nations such as China and India and would mean U.S. jobs moved abroad. On the other hand, Washington risks losing a race to develop clean technologies.
A study by the Pew Charitable Trusts last week indicated that worldwide revenue from installing clean energy facilities could total $1.9 trillion from 2012 to 2018.
With the right policies, it said the United States could get 14.5 percent of the total. (Additional reporting by Nina Chestney in London; Editing by Tom Pfeiffer)

HBT: Mariners weighing $100M offer for Hernandez

Felix Hernandez is under contract through the 2014 season, slated to make $19.5 million this season and $20 million next year. But the Mariners want to keep him under contract longer, Ken Rosenthal reports, and are weighing an offer:?four years, $100 million, according to his source.

As for where they stand on all of that:

It is not known whether the Mariners actually have made Hernandez such an offer; one source described the two sides as ?dancing? but not deeply engaged.

Sounds like my social life when I was single. Here?s hoping King Felix does better than I did sealing the deal.

Nationals swinging for fences

Soriano signing caps a roster designed to win it all this season

Washington Nationals General Manager Mike Rizzo, left, added?Rafael Soriano, a proven closer,?to the team's roster in January.

Tony DeMarco

With two major moves last week, the Washington Nationals essentially have set their Opening Day roster ? and what a roster it appears to be.

Rafael Soriano is the new closer, and Davey Johnson's good problem to have is three right-handers who have closed big-league games successfully.

And think about this: The Nationals didn't have room in their first base/outfield mix for Michael Morse, who is a season removed from a .303/.360/.550 line with 31 homers and 95 RBI.

So coming off a 98-win regular season and devastating Game 5 NLDS loss, Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo's off-season plus-minus looks like this:

Added: Soriano, Denard Span, Dan Haren and pitching prospects A.J. Cole and Blake Treinem, with free-agents Adam LaRoche and Zack Duke retained.

Subtracted: Morse, Edwin Jackson, Sean Burnett, Tom Gorzelanny, John Lannan, Mike Gonzalez and pitching prospect Alex Meyer.

And if this really is going to be Johnson's final managerial season ? as stipulated in the two-year extension he signed in November ? attached is the pressure to win it all.

Here's how the Nationals could be better in 2013:

  • Full seasons from two of the game's most-dynamic and dominant young stars ? Stephen Strasburg and Bryce Harper. A strong Cy Young bid by the former, and some MVP consideration for the latter could translate into a 100-win regular-season.
  • Strasburg, you might remember, was shut down after 159.1 innings last season. Bump that number up to around 200 in 2013. Harper played in 140 games and put up a .270/.340./.477 line as a 19-year-old.

Drew Storen also fits here, as he pitched only 30.1 innings in 2012. Two years ago, he saved 43 games; now he's projected to share primary setup duties with Tyler Clippard.

  • You can quibble about the price for Soriano ? $28 million guaranteed, with half of it deferred, making for an annual average value of $11.8 million. Not to mention the high (31st-overall) 2013 draft pick.

But when you're trying to win now, putting Soriano's proven effectiveness ? if not durability ? behind Storen and Clippard at the back of your bullpen is a smart move, and a risk worth taking.

  • Trading for Span was the sensible option to still-unsigned Michael Bourn ? not the Gold Glove-caliber defender that Bourn is, but a reasonable facsimile in all-round game. Span's 4.8 WAR in 2012 matches Bourn's 4.75 average over the last four seasons, although it fell short of Bourn's 6.0 mark last season.

Span makes the outfield better defensively, moving Harper out of center field and into what likely will be a long-term corner spot. And lineup-wise, Span's presence drops Jayson Werth to a better-suited fifth spot in a projected lineup of Span, Bryce Harper, Ryan Zimmerman, Adam LaRoche, Werth, Ian Desmond, Danny Espinosa, Kurt Suzuki.

  • There is no significant age issue on the roster. Haren is the oldest pitcher at 32. Werth will turn 34 in May, LaRoche will play this season at 33, and role-player Chad Tracy will turn 33 in May. So only LaRoche figures to be headed for a production decline, coming off an .853 OPS/4.0 WAR season.

Remember that Werth played only 81 games in 2012 due to a wrist injury, and Zimmerman played hurt in far too many. So an increase in runs from 731 (5th in the NL) appears likely.

  • Zimmerman's right shoulder has been surgically repaired, and he is expected to enter spring training healthy. His throwing from third base was so adversely affected down the stretch that he appeared to be trying to find an arm slot where it wouldn't hurt.
  • The Morse-for-prospects option was deemed the better way to go in part because the Nats' projected bench of Wilson Ramos, Tracy, Tyler Moore, Steve Lombardozzi and Roger Bernadina has a blend of righty-lefty balance, power, speed and versatility. And there is the possibility of late-season contributions from prospects Anthony Rendon and Brian Goodwin.
Potential problems? Even with Strasburg's innings increase and the Haren-for-Jackson swap, it's hard to project the staff allowing fewer than the MLB-low 594 it surrendered in 2012. Especially if injuries strike. There's no John Lannan around anymore, so the sixth-starter options are projected long man Zack Duke and Yunesky Maya.

And losing four left-handed relievers ? replaced only by Bill Bray ? is troubling. Granted, Clippard's deadly changeup has made him more effective against left-handed hitters, and Storen has been equally effective against lefties and righties.

Still, look for this to be Rizzo's next move, as the bullpen currently projects to include Duke as the only left-hander, with Bray a strong possibility with a good spring.

Another way to look at the Nationals' rise to prominence is their payroll. We're not talking Dodgers-Angels- Yankees stratosphere, but the Nationals' payroll is surging.

After a three-year run (2009-2011) when the payroll stayed in the $60-70-million range, it jumped to $92.5 million in 2012, and could rise past $110 million in 2013. Here's a breakdown of the upper tier (numbers from Baseball Prospectus/Cot's Baseball Contracts site):

Werth ? $16 million
Zimmerman ? $14 million
Haren ? $13 million
LaRoche ? $10 million
Soriano ? $7 million
Suzuki ? $6.45 million
Gio Gonzalez ? $6.25 million
Span ? $4.75 million

Arbitration will play a huge part in where the final payroll number ends up, as eligibles include Ian Desmond, Jordan Zimmermann, Storen, Clippard, Ross Detwiler, Craig Stammen and Bernadina. But that also means most of the team's core is under control for at least three more seasons. All of which are likely to see the Nationals as World Series contenders.

Alex Pelosi's Sundance debut has political angle

(AP) ? Alexandra Pelosi was beaming: She had just made her Sundance Film Festival debut with the HBO documentary "Fall from Grace," about former New Jersey Gov. Jim McGreevey; her mother, Rep. Nancy Pelosi was on hand to witness it; and Sundance's founder and Pelosi's hero, Robert Redford, made it a point to stop by to witness the event.

"I'm 42 years old and finally made it to Sundance. This is the best day of my life ? it's downhill from here," she cracked.

That's highly unlikely. With the film set to make its debut on HBO on March 28 and the growing buzz around it, Pelosi is bound to have more celebratory moments for "Fall from Grace." It's her eighth HBO film: She's also done documentaries on homeless children, the tea party movement and Ted Haggard, the pastor who became ensnared in a drug and sex scandal.

"I'm drawn to broken men ? Why is that?" Pelosi pondered at a brunch Friday morning to celebrate the documentary. "I don't know. I'm really drawn to the recovering politician. . there's a lot of that in the film."

McGreevey was the governor of New Jersey and considered a rising Democratic star when he resigned in 2004 after it was revealed that McGreevey, then married with a child, was cheating on his wife with another man.

The scandal became a tabloid sensation, but after that, McGreevey came out as a gay man, trained in the seminary and started working with incarcerated women. The film follows McGreevey as he helps the women in prison and in their attempts to make the transition after their release.

"He's taken his own shame and turned it into something good, which most of the other fallen men don't do," she said, adding that a return to politics was unlikely for him: "He's too sincere."

McGreevey, who was also at the brunch with partner Mark O'Donnell, said he was initially reluctant to do a documentary about his life.

"I think my personal story had been told time and time again, but when Alexandra said she was willing to follow the women and get to know the women . it became something different," he said.

Pelosi spent so much time with McGreevey that her young children make cameo appearances in the film, and spent major holidays with McGreevey as he visited women in prison.

Nancy Pelosi recalled calling her daughter on Christmas to find out what the filmmaker's kids got for Christmas.

"She said, 'Mom I'm not going to tell you where I am right now,' and I said, 'Well, I think you are because you brought it up,'" the House Democratic minority leader recalled.

She was in prison with McGreevey: the younger Pelosi recalls her mother didn't take the news well, chastising her for not being home with her children, now 5 and 6.

"I thought, 'There's something more important than me and my kids,' and that's something I learned from Jim McGreevey," Pelosi said.

Pelosi said after that conversation with her mother, "I wasn't sure how supportive my mom was of the project ? until today."

The debut of the film marked a career pinnacle for Pelosi, a former NBC News journalist; having Redford appear at the film's premiere was an added bonus.

"Robert Redford was famous and could have retired after 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,'" she said, referencing one of his most famous films.

"But he kept working and his best work was in front of him, and if you ask me, Robert Redford's best work is Sundance because he makes everybody else's dream come true," she continued.

"He's using his fame for good, just like Jim McGreevey is using his shame for good."

(AP) ? Latinos are taking a more prominent role in President Barack Obama's second inauguration, from the first Hispanic Supreme Court justice swearing in the vice president to a star-studded celebration of Latino culture.

Eva Longoria, a co-chairwoman for Obama's campaign, is hosting a salute to the president Sunday evening. Antonio Banderas, Rosario Dawson, Marc Anthony and other entertainers are scheduled to appear at the event, called the "Latino Inaugural 2013: In Performance at the Kennedy Center." San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro will address the audience.

Meanwhile, Justice Sonia Sotomayor administered the oath of office Sunday morning to Vice President Joe Biden.

Longoria says this is her first time attending an inauguration. She told ABC's "This Week" she will advocate on public policy and that everyone should be civically engaged.

91% Lincoln

All Critics (192) | Top Critics (43) | Fresh (175) | Rotten (17)

It's the most remarkable movie Steven Spielberg has made in quite a spell, and one of the things that makes it remarkable is how it fulfills those expectations by simultaneously ignoring and transcending them.

Lincoln paints a powerful and compelling portrait of the man who has become an icon. We don't need to see more of his life to understand how rare a figure he was - this window is more than sufficient.

Lincoln offers proof of what magic can happen when an actor falls in love with his character. Because as great as Day-Lewis has been in his many parts, he has never seemed quite so smitten.

The film masterfully captures the dual dilemmas facing the president in the final months of his life: how to bring the war between the states to an end, and how to eradicate slavery, once and for all.

Lincoln is a stirring reminder that politics can be noble. Might there be a lesson here for today's shrill D.C. discourse? 'Tis a consummation devoutly to be wished.

Day-Lewis' voice is thin and reedy, which jibes with historical accounts but subverts our expectations. His attitude makes listeners lean in, and so do we, magnetized by his kindly reserve.

A film as absorbing and unassuming as the central character.

Steven Spielberg's masterly, high-minded recreation of Abraham Lincoln's long-shot battle to get the 13th amendment outlawing slavery through a hostile Congress.

The filmmakers write history with lightning, and their instrument is Daniel Day-Lewis as the graying, hunched and shuffling Lincoln, bent but not broken and as tall and thin as a stick figure in a Tim Burton cartoon.

Lewis keeps his fire on a low flame, quietly navigating the underlying tone of hagiography and emerging as a believable man, and exactly the kind of pragmatic idealist America could use today.

This is movie magic -- history coming to life, before our eyes.

Even as a historical figure considerably better known than any he's played before, there's no trace of impersonation in Lewis's performance.

As one of this generations greatest actors, two time Oscar winner Day-Lewis is a shoo-in for a chance at a third trophy.

As essential an entry in Spielberg's catalog as his most popular blockbusters and heralded epics.

Spielberg undoubtedly is asking us to pay attention and learn something - there is no nodding off in this class - but even with all the talk of ratification, and envoys, and securing votes, Lincoln is an engaging, if not rousing film-going experience.

Lincoln is a performance masterclass. Spielberg humanises the icon and admires Lincoln the man - in the face of the challenges that defined him. It's a special effort in the capable hands of a legend.

Lincoln is Spielberg's best film since 2005's Munich, and one of 2012's finest.

This is an almost religiously revered president portrayed as he's never been portrayed on screen before, a tale told with grace and sophistication. If only for this fact alone, Lincoln is a work deserving of praise.

Especially in today's frustratingly gridlocked political environment, Lincoln is timelier than ever. It gives us hope that government can accomplish great things even as it drags itself through the muck and strain of corruption.

While Spielberg captures a time, Day-Lewis captures another brilliant performance, and some of the supporting actors may capture Oscar nominations, the film didn't capture my soul the way I was hoping.

The film presents Abraham Lincoln's deliberations as a function of his innate morality, as well as an emotional rightness.

A fascinating history lesson taking place mostly in the backrooms of Washington.

Good film, but 'Lincoln' is not a movie about Abraham Lincoln - it's about a man in an Abe costume posing as someone who had overwhelming love for African-Americans, when in reality that was far from the Lincoln documented in history.

It's a superior achievement for Kushner, and makes for one of the best of Spielberg's "serious" movies.

A paternalistic Lincoln who freed the slaves? Bad movie and worse politics...

An Oscar-ready historical masterpiece that does double duty as a history lesson and as a reminder of the paralytic limitations of a house divided.

Lindsey Vonn gets 1st victory in 5 weeks in Italy

CORTINA D'AMPEZZO, Italy (AP) ? Lindsey Vonn showed she's back in form Saturday, winning a World Cup downhill for her first victory in more than five weeks.

The four-time overall World Cup champion, who recently took three weeks off to regain her strength following an intestinal problem, clocked 1 minute, 38.25 seconds down the Olympia delle Tofane course. Current overall leader Tina Maze of Slovenia finished second, 0.43 seconds behind, and Vonn's American teammate Leanne Smith was third, 0.89 back.

It was Vonn's seventh win in Cortina and the 58th of her career, moving her within four of the all-time record held by Austrian great Annemarie Moser-Proell.

Vonn's last win was a super-G in St. Moritz, Switzerland, on Dec. 8.

Racing continues in Cortina with a super-G Sunday.

I have a few questions, on the character sheet it asks for role, ability and weapon.

Is the role their current job or along those lines and what type of ability should they have? Also, as for the weapons why would they carry weapons around anyway? I'm not going against it, I'm just curious.

I think roll is "Girl 7", "Guy 10" ect. but thats a good question about the abilities, and the danger level?

@FreeRunner, WinterWhisperz-- Role is exactly how Winter described it. As for the abilities, they are mostly related to the mind- such as hypnotism, mind control, mind reading, telekinesis, etc. They won't end up carrying weapons until they begin to rebel against the government, so this is just planning, I guess. As for the danger level, it's a scale of 1-10 on how dangerous your character is in a fight or otherwise.
