Health and Fitness: Thyroid - vuoree's posterous

Your thyroid gland is responsible for producing many of the hormones that regulate metabolism in your body. Basically, this means that a properly functioning thyroid helps to produce the chemicals that convert calories into energy, on the cellular level. When these chemicals, or hormones, are deficient in some way, many symptoms result that can end in disease or damage to other organs.

The thyroid gland?s main function is to remove iodine from the blood. It then uses the iodine to produce hormones. The two main thyroid hormones are thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3).? When these hormones are released from the thyroid and into the blood, a large percentage of T4 is transformed into T3, affecting the metabolism of cells.

The location of the thyroid gland itself is in your neck, just beneath your Adam?s apple and above your collar bone.? Some people mistake their Adam?s apple for their thyroid, so it is important to know that the thyroid gland location is closer to the collar bone. There is a soft area above your collar bone. If you place a finger there and move up until you find a slightly more firm area beneath your Adam?s apple, this is where your thyroid gland location is. It is a butterfly-shaped gland comprised of two side lobes along the windpipe, connected by a narrow band of tissue.

Thyroid Gland Location

It?s possible to inspect your thyroid for swelling or possible damage by holding a mirror in front of you, and watch for unusual enlargements or bulges in the gland while drinking a glass of water. You will likely notice your Adam?s apple moving up and down as you swallow. Beneath that, if you see your thyroid gland location exhibit any enlargement or lumps, you will want to consult with your doctor for further inspection and tests.
