Schumaker's baseball card is ... the Rally Squirrel

Topps is launching its 2012 Series 1 Baseball trading cards on Wednesday, and among the especially notable finds is Skip Schumaker?s new card ? which actually features very little of Schumaker at all. All you see of the actual player is his foot, because the card is dedicated to Rally Squirrel. Topps:

Skip Schumaker?s card had a bit of a make-over this year. Skip?s card is an image of the ?Rally? squirrel that ran across the field at Busch Stadium twice in the same game during last year?s playoffs. You may remember a ?squirrel? also showed up later in the Series, this time in Philly.

?It was a collaborative decision at Topps,? Topps spokesperson Matthew Altman told Off the Bench. ?Thought the Rally squirrel would be a fun way to pay tribute to the Cardinals World Series run.

?The players don?t see the cards beforehand; they have to be approved by MLB but players do not see them and since the cards don?t come out until Wednesday, Skip has not seen it yet.?

Topps also gives us a first look at Albert Pujols and Jose Reyes in their new uniforms. They?re Photoshopped, but Altman says their in-game cards will be released with Series 2 later this year.

UPDATE: Altman adds ? ?There are a few Schumaker cards in the set that will have his actual photo (I actually just found this out), but the squirrel is the actual variation card and in the set. A few other players have multiple images as well, including Starlin Castro, Albert Pujols, among others, so not it?s not a strange occurrence to have more than one card.?
