Barnes & Noble continues British invasion, forges pacts with Argos, Blackwell's and Foyles

DNP Barnes & Noble

Barnes & Noble has continued its quest to stock the shelves of United Kingdom bookstores with Nooks, by adding Argos, Blackwell's and Foyles to the list of where you can get one. Those retailers will join John Lewis in carrying the Nook Simple Touch and its Glow Light-toting cousin, giving UK'ers nearly a thousand bricks and mortar sites to get one -- including bookstores at 55 colleges and universities. Those locations will join Barnes & Nobles recently launched online website in selling the e-readers -- but if you like to Touch before buying, the PR is after the break.

Bird Clearing Supplies

Living in a clean and clear environment is essential for us if we want to have a wonderful life. The same thing happens with pets and in the particular case of birds this is of extreme importance since we are talking about delicate creatures that require constant attention and care. Bird clearing supplies can be of great utility to keep your birds clean but also to keep the cage or the aviary safe and comfortable for them.

There are many items you can count with and discovering which are the available products will certainly help you.

When it comes to keeping your birds clean and clear, there are some useful products that are especially designed for them according to their needs and requirements. In this sense, you have feather cleaning sprays that will make your bird?s feathers look shinning and strong, bird bath shampoos and ointments, dietary supplements that are meant to provide your bird with the needed nutrients in order to look beautiful and colorful as well as many implements that have to do with your bird?s grooming such as clippers and trimmers.

Once your bird is clean, you will have to proceed to clean its cage and to keep it perfectly comfortable.

Here we can talk about products such as cage wipes (which are great to keep germs away from your bird cage), bird droppings remover (especially useful since such elements tend to get stiff when dried), cage deodorizers and cleaners (made with soft solutions that will not cause any harm to your bird but that will keep the cage fresh and clean), bird cage brushes (to remove extra and detailed dirt) and also different types of bird cage sprays to maintain a clean environment for your pet.

All of these products are available both online and at pet stores. They are accesible in terms of price and certainly worth trying.

AP's fabled Saigon team thins, with recent deaths

HANOI, Vietnam (AP) ? It's been a cruel year for the fabled crew of reporters that that covered the Vietnam War for The Associated Press.

Correspondent George Esper died in February, writer Roy Essoyan a month later. Legendary photographer Horst Faas passed away in May.

Malcolm Browne, whose photograph of a South Vietnamese monk engulfed in flames became an iconic image of the war, died on Monday.

Their deaths represent the slipping away of a generation of war reporters that brought the reality of the conflict to the living rooms of America in unprecedented detail and horrifying close-up. Often working under hostile conditions, their work helped set a new standard for combat journalism and inspired scores of journalists in their wake.

"We have lost four journalistic legends from the great AP Saigon bureau this year, and I fear we are running out of them," said Richard Pyle, who covered the Vietnam War for five years and was AP's Saigon bureau chief from 1970 to 1973, in an email. "After Horst died in May I wrote that it was suddenly as if a rooftop sniper had found out where we live and was picking us off one by one."

Esper wrote more words about the Vietnam War than any other correspondent during his 10 years in the country, and refused to leave when it fell to the northern communists on April 30, 1975. He returned in 1993 to open the AP's first postwar bureau in Hanoi.

As chief of photo operations for The Associated Press in Saigon for a decade beginning in 1962, Faas covered the fighting and also recruited and trained new talent from among foreign and Vietnamese freelancers. He was severely wounded in 1967 and won four major photo awards in Vietnam, including the first of his two Pulitzers.

An exhibition of his photos will go on display at the Hong Kong Foreign Correspondent's Club starting Sept. 4.

Browne was perhaps best known for his photo of the burning monk, which appeared on front pages around the globe and sent shudders all the way to the White House, prompting President John F. Kennedy to order a re-evaluation of his administration's Vietnam policy. Browne also won a Pulitzer for his work in Vietnam.

Many hundreds of reporters from around the world covered the conflict, but the AP was especially well represented, winning five Pulitzers for its coverage from the war zone from 1964 to 1973 and an additional one in 1974 for a photo of a former prisoner of war being greeted by his family.

"George, Horst, Roy, Malcolm .... like others in Vietnam in the 1960s, they shared a fierce devotion to eyewitness journalism," said Kathleen Carroll, AP executive editor and senior vice president. "See the fighting for yourself. Count the bodies yourself. Talk to people you trust. "

Ed White, who worked in Saigon bureau for more than five years and celebrated his 90th birthday on Wednesday, said he was sad to be saying "sayonara" to his colleagues.

"They were such a great bunch of people. I sometimes just stood around in awe of them."

Homdoor: The Love of Barbecue: Grilling vs. Tandoor |

After reading my post on Tandoori Chicken, I?m sure you noticed my love for tandoori foods. So when I was recently asked to share an article about Barbecuing using the grill vs. tandoor, I was happy to share it with everyone! Over the next few days I also will be sharing recipes from Chef Hemant Mathur, the Michelin-starred chef of NYC?s Tulsi restaurant.

Americans love their barbecue and no other cuisine comes close to the love and ritual that comes with it. From backyard barbecues to professional competitions, each grill master, self-proclaimed or otherwise, takes his methods, sauces, marinades and tools very seriously closely guarding their secrets to deeply delicious meals. Barbecue is everywhere, you can see it at sports events, smell it any summer weekend and taste it all-year around.

Barbecue can be prepared in a number of different style cookers, but when it comes to backyard barbecue, most people use a gas-fuelled grill filled with charcoal and topped with a metal grate. Foods are heaped onto the grate and quickly cooked to charred perfection.

For South Asians, the notion of barbecue also includes foods cooked in the tandoor, or South Asian barbecue, with its smoked aromas and seared-in juices and flavors. While many South Asians will cook tandoori-marinated foods on their backyard grills and be perfectly happy with the less-than-authentic results, for meticulous foodies and grillmaster purists, nothing but the genuine will do. The question that arises is exactly what is the difference between the two grilling methods?

The actual term ?barbecue? traditionally refers to the slow cooking process found mostly in the South, which slow cooks and smokes meats in a ?pit,? sometimes up to 18 hours and results in aromatic, tender and juicy cuts even with the toughest of meats. Backyard grills, on the other hand, grill foods on top of a charcoal-fuelled flame resulting in a much faster cooking method, usually between 15 to 45 minutes, depending on the foods cooked. Today, the term ?barbecue? has expanded to include both types of cooking as well as the actual social event of a meal cooked (and eaten) from an outdoor hearth. Although barbecue traditions are not native to the US, the first recorded US mention of barbecue dates back to 1697 when George Washington chowed down in Alexandria, VA. As the country expanded westwards, barbecue went with it, and now, the love of backyard grilling and professional pit barbecues make this cuisine one of the most enjoyed and sought after meals in the country.

When foods are prepared on a backyard grill, they are primarily cooked through radiant heat, a process that heats food to temperature up to 500?F. Meats grilled at this temperature acquire a distinctive roasted aroma through a chemical process called the Malliard reaction, which happens between amino acids and sugars in the food. Grilled foods must usually be cut into smaller pieces to ensure even cooking throughout and some grillmasters baste sauce and/or oil over the foods to maintain moisture.

Grilling is often toted as a healthier cooking option, as opposed to baking and frying, since much of the fats liquefy and drip off of the meats. However, if not closely watched, foods, especially those without inherent fats such as white fish and most vegetables, can become excessively dry and tough.

Tandoor ovens, by design, differ from open top grills, but include grilling techniques as one of its three cooking methods. A tandoor is a belly-shaped cylindrical clay oven that originated in the ancient Indus Valley civilizations and can be found under varied monikers all over Asia. The ?tandoor,? however, is mostly associated with South Asian cuisine. What makes tandoor cooking different from grilling is that its unique shape allows for foods to be cooked in four different methods. Foods like meats, seafood and vegetables are skewered onto long steel rods and place inside the belly of the tandoor. The heat from the bottom burning charcoals firstly chars the foods on the outside through radiant heat similar to a grill. Secondly, the moisture-retaining clay walls of the tandoor retain and circulate moist heat around the skewers similar to a convection oven retaining the foods inner juices. Third, as the juices drip down onto the charcoals, it produces smoke which gets captured within the belly and ?smokes? the foods imparting a signature ?tandoor? scent. Since temperatures in the tandoor can reach up to 900?F, foods cook quickly and evenly with little chance of drying out. Finally, the walls of the tandoor are used as a griddle to cook various flatbreads such as naan, lavaash, tonis and Afghan flatbread. More versatile than a grill, cooking in a tandoor usually results in more flavorful and tender dishes.

Tandoors, like barbecues, are also known to encourage fierce rivalry between its masters. In the US, Chef Hemant Mathur, the Michelin-starred chef of NYC?s Tulsi restaurant is recognized as the country?s top Tandoor Master by restaurant critics, celebrities and politicians (Tulsinyc.com). Although he has a commercial grade tandoor in his restaurant, for home, Chef Hemant recommends the Homdoor, a portable backyard tandoor grill that is easy and safe to use (Homdoor.com). The Homdoor, designed and manufactured by Ron Levy, a ceramic artist who has been making commercial tandoors for over 30 years, is designed with a clay belly encased in stainless steel and outfitted with wheels, making it perfect for the backyard. The Homdoor comes with all the utensils needed to cook various creations. Cooking in the Homdoor, Chef Hemant shares the following epicurean recipes that reflect his Tandoor Master status. Although the recipes are designed for a tandoor, a regular grill can be used as a substitute.

{Stay tuned for some mouth water recipes from Chef Hemant himself!}

US economy grew at 1.7 percent rate in 2nd quarter

(AP) ? The U.S. economy grew at a tepid 1.7 percent annual rate in the April-June quarter, suggesting growth will stay weak in the second half of the year.

Slightly stronger consumer spending and greater exports were the main reasons the Commerce Department reported Wednesday that growth was better than its initial estimate of 1.5 percent. Still, growth has slowed from the 2 percent annual rate in the January-March quarter and the 4.1 percent rate in the fourth quarter of 2011.

Economists expect only modest improvement in the second half of the year. Most believe the economy will keep growing, but at a subpar rate of around 2 percent.

"The economy was sluggish in the second quarter and the slight upward revision ... does nothing to change that picture," said John Ryding, an economist at RDQ Economics, in a note to clients.

The report was the government's second look at gross domestic product for the second quarter. GDP measures the country's total output of goods and services, from the purchase of restaurant meals to construction of highways and bridges. A third and final estimate of second-quarter growth will be released next month.

Growth at or below 2 percent is not enough to lower the unemployment rate, which was 8.3 percent in July. Most expect the unemployment rate to stay above 8 percent for the rest of this year.

A weak economy and high unemployment could hurt President Barack Obama re-election chances and bolster Mitt Romney's campaign. Republicans are in Tampa, Fla. this week to formally nominate Romney and have pointed to the dismal growth in making the case to elect their candidate.

Economist Robert Brusca said the various changes in the second estimate should be positive for growth going forward. He noted more consumer demand in the spring than previously thought, which drives 70 percent of economic growth. And he pointed to less restocking of shelves, which suggests businesses could replenish their stockpiles in the current quarter. Faster inventory growth increases factory production, which boosts growth.

But Paul Dales, senior U.S. economist at Capital Economics, said the small revision to second-quarter growth "offers little comfort."

"We are already two months through the third quarter and more up-to-date figures show that the economy is still struggling," Dales said.

Slow growth could prompt the Federal Reserve to take greater steps to boost the economy when policymakers meet again on Sept. 12-13. In late July, Fed policymakers spoke with increased urgency about the need to provide more help for a weak U.S. economy.

Chairman Ben Bernanke could offer some clues Friday to what the Fed might announce when he speaks at a Fed conference in Jackson Hole, Wyo.

Some suspect the Fed will wait to see how the economy performed in August, especially after July's data was better than expected.

Employers created 163,000 jobs in July, the most since February. Consumers stepped up retail spending, factories produced more goods and the housing recovery continued with increases in both new and previously occupied homes.

The upward revision to second-quarter growth was largely because consumers spent at a slightly faster pace than first estimated. Consumer spending grew a 1.7 percent rate, better than the 1.5 percent initial estimated. Exports, which add to growth, were also stronger, growing at a 6 percent rate.

Government spending, which has been a drag on growth for the past two years, contracted again in the second quarter. But the decline at an annual rate of 0.9 percent was less than the initial estimated drop of 1.4 percent. That reflected a much smaller dip in defense spending than first estimated.

All of the changes boosted economic output by $6.5 billion more than previously estimated, leaving total GDP at $13.56 trillion, after adjusting for inflation, in the second quarter.

Mystery, Romance and Franchising: Culverhouse Professor ... - Dialog

August 27th, 2012 - Filed under: Cover Story

Illustration by Doug Shinholster and Erin Hill

By Kerie Kerstetter

University of Alabama professor James Combs took everything he knew about?college textbooks and threw it out the?window when he agreed to co-author a graphic novel on franchising last year.

Published in June 2011, ?Tales of Garc?n: The Franchise Players? is one of?the most current textbooks on the subject?of franchising and family business, yet its gripping story line and illustrations resemble that of a comic book. Combs, a professor of management and marketing in the Culverhouse College of Commerce and Business Administration, is pioneering a new approach to learning about business through his work with the graphic novel literature.

?The whole idea is that if you?re engaged, you?re paying attention to what you?re reading,? Combs said. ?It?s great when you can put education and entertainment together.?

The book is about a charismatic hotel owner named Garc?n, who has a knack for entertaining guests with his stories of adventure. His family business has seen limited growth, yet a possible solution emerges when a mysterious investor offers to become the hotel?s first franchisee. Garc?n has two children, Ram?n and Isabel, who help run the family business, and they each have different ideas about whether the hotel should be franchised.

?The book really looks at how to best grow your business without losing that personal service aspect,? Combs said.

The authors describe the plot as one of mystery, romance and adventure, as the family explores the options of franchising.

Combs collaborated with Dave Ketchen (Auburn University) and Jeremy Short (University of Oklahoma), both professors of management and veterans of the graphic novel genre. Ketchen and Short authored the two-part, graphic-novel series ?Atlas Black in 2010? that focused on the subject of business management. The three met through their doctoral study at LSU, where Combs and Short were each students of Ketchen?s.

?We were all chatting at dinner one night when they said, ?Why don?t we do a book on franchising??? Combs said about the origins of ?Tales of Garc?n.?

Short said the relevance of franchising in today?s business, as well as Comb?s expertise on the subject, made him a logical partner for their next graphic novel.

?Franchising is an important form of entrepreneurship in the U.S. and worldwide,? Short said. ?Jim is an expert in the area of franchising research, so he was a natural fit to be part of the project.?

Short and Ketchen were the storytellers, responsible for generating the book?s characters and plot, while Combs worked to weave the franchising concepts into the story line. The creative process for their?graphic novels is quite simple.

?We think of a general plot that has ties to the content we want to cover and then create memorable characters,? Short said.??In this case, we built the book around the larger-than-life patriarch, Garc?n, who is a mixture of J. Peterman from Seinfeld and ?The Most Interesting Man in the World.??

Short said the actual writing of the book then becomes pretty easy since the material they cover ? business, management, entrepreneurship ? has so many applications to everyday life.

?Our basic idea is to build on the concept of storytelling and the concept that individuals learn and convey more information naturally through memorable stories,? Short said.

The book has received a favorable response since its release.

?We?ve received positive feedback from professors who have used the book in their classes,? Combs said. ?Their students have seemed to really enjoy it.?

However, Short said that they also wrote the book with other audiences in?mind ? namely, current practitioners and business owners.

?(For these audiences) most of the popular books on the subject seem to have ?idiots? or ?dummies? as their target market,? Short said. ?We felt we could do better by?offering a book with an engaging plot that builds off cutting-edge research. (With ?Tales of Garc?n?), we want to make the content engaging and entertaining while making it clear we aren?t dumbing down?the material.?

The book is available through Flat?World Knowledge, an online publishing?platform for textbooks. The first chapter?is viewable for free, and the remaining chapters are available in PDF for $20. Hard copies of the book are also available for?purchase on Amazon.

Combs said he plans to start using the book in his classroom. Combs is new to C&BA, having arrived from Florida State University.

?I came to the business school last fall, and it?s growing really fast,? Combs said. ?We?re really moving forward as a business school, adding a lot of programs, and it?s really exciting.?

Atlanta, GA - Electrician Atlanta

Make sure to have a contractor or commercial electrician in Atlanta install a power outlet in the cabinet above where the microwave will go. If you don?t do this, you will be struggling to find a place to plug it in during or after the installation of the microwave and hood vent.

Most people don?t think of their circuit breakers until they lose power unexpectedly. One of the best things you can do to improve the safety and efficiency of your home is to regularly test your breakers by switching them on and off at least once yearly. This clears the breaker contacts of any built-up corrosion and allows them to work more efficiently and safely. If your breakers frequently trip, this may indicate potential safety issues that require an electrician.

To brighten up a room, add new light fixtures. Changing your current light fixtures to upgraded fixtures can provide you with more light than what you currently have. An electrician can change your lights to a newer style for a relatively cheap price. You can also add pendant lights over your sinks.

Consider hiring a professional to do the electrical work for your home improvement project. It may seem easy to change out an outlet from two prongs to three, but if you are unfamiliar with electrical work, the safest thing to do is to have an electrician take care of the rewiring for you.

The days of calling a plumber or electrician for minor household repairs are long gone, not to mention the outrageous costs. Today, hundreds of websites are dedicated to sharing how-to tips and tricks, in a way that is easily understood by even the most reluctant handyman. You will find step-by-step directions and many also, include video demonstrations.

Unless you are an experienced electrician, don?t try and do the electrical work yourself. You may be tempted to run a bunch of extension cords, or change the number of prongs on an outlet, but you shouldn?t attempt it because it can be dangerous if you do it incorrectly. For safety, hire a professional electrician to do all of the electrical work.

Use bartering to accomplish your more-ambitious home improvement goals. If you?re not an electrician, but would like some new outlets wired in, check the internet for bartering opportunities in your area and don?t be shy to make your offers. You?d be surprised at how many highly skilled tradespeople are willing to exchange their skills for some home-baked goods, a good car wash and wax job, or perhaps some computer lessons or website work.

Get an electrical outlet put into the cabinet on top of the microwave?s future home. This will give you a convenient, hidden place to power your microwave. That is a safety issue that is easily resolved with this small improvement.

Replacing old light fixtures is a great little pick-me-up for your kitchen or bathroom. Tired track lighting can be replaced with modern lights for less than a thousand bucks. Pendant lighting is a good choice, and it looks especially great in kitchens.

Millions of homeowners decide every day to make some type of improvement to their homes, and many of them end up with poor results. Pay attention to the tips provided to you in this article so that you?re always making the best possible home improvement decisions when it?s time to spruce up your house.

Cash for Breaking Motatapu Course Record Lures Current Record ...

A record seven months out from race day and the elite field for the 2013 Motatapu Speight?s Summit 47km high country mountain bike event scheduled for 9 March 2013 has been filled. Only half of the overall mountain bike field entries remain available.

The elite field, capped at 100 riders, has filled faster than organisers expected, possibly due to the lure of a cash prize for breaking the course record.

Race Director Gemma Boyle says, ?Elite riders are known to enter events relatively late, so it?s great to see so many have entered early to secure their spot and be in with the chance to win some cash.?

This coming year?s elite field will include current Motatapu record holder and current NZ Cross Country Junior Champion Anton Cooper, who?s looking to improve his time across the course. And he has an added incentive, thanks to Volkswagen NZ. Volkswagen NZ is putting up a $1,000 cash prize for anyone who breaks the course record in any of the Motatapu events (excluding the multisport and team events). This year saw a photo finish between Gavin Mason and Mark Williams for the mountain bike title and Boyle is expecting the lure of prize money will up the stakes even more.

Less than half of the entries remain available in the sport and recreational mountain bike categories and given the unprecedented sales for the elite field organisers are expecting that entries for all mountain bike categories will sell out earlier than previous years. Would-be participants are encouraged to enter now to avoid the disappointment of missing out.

Boyle also attributes the early entries to the inclusion of entry waves for the sport field, a system introduced for the 2012 event.

?For this year?s event we altered the way sport entrants enter the event; it?s first in, first served. When you enter determines where you are on the start line,? says Boyle. ?The competitors first experienced this new wave system at the March event this year and I think people have seen how it works; and more people are keen to be the first out the gates. The sport fields will start in waves of 200 competitors. The first three waves have closed, and wave four is filling fast.

?With less than half of the field left, it?s my guess the mountain bike event is likely to be full by the end of October. If mountain bikers want to ensure they make the 2013 event they will have to get their entry in fast,? says Boyle.

The Motatapu Speight?s Summit 47km mountain bike event is New Zealand?s largest mountain bike event and traverses three high country stations from Lake Wanaka to Arrowtown. The route is accessible only once a year, through this event. The Motatapu also includes four other events held on the same day: New Zealand?s third-largest marathon, the Arrowtown.com Miners Trail 15km mountain run, the XTERRA Motatapu UDC Finance Triathlon and, new for 2013, the R&R Sport Multisport.

Drone strike may have killed Haqqani network leader

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - A U.S. drone in Pakistan may have killed a top commander of Haqqani insurgents behind some of the biggest attacks on Western and Afghan government targets in Afghanistan, sources said on Saturday, but this was denied by a senior Haqqani leader.

Pakistani intelligence officials and militant sources said Badruddin Haqqani, the network's head of operations who is also believed to handle its vital business interests and smuggling operations, may have been killed during the strike this week in Pakistan's tribal North Waziristan.

One senior Pakistani intelligence official said Badruddin had fled a compound that he and other militants were in after it was hit by a missile, then was killed by a second drone strike on a car that he was in.

However, Maulvi Ahmed Jan, a senior Haqqani network commander, denied Badruddin had been killed. He said a distant relative, 13-year-old Osama, was killed in the strike and his funeral had been mistaken by locals for Badruddin's.

The insurgents would soon provide proof that Badruddin was alive, Jan said.

"We have proudly announced before when our people died in action or in drone strikes. Jihad against the occupying forces in Afghanistan is our mission and death is certain in fighting them. Why would we keep it secret?" he said.

Afghanistan's Taliban movement, allies of the Haqqani network, also said Badruddin was alive.

There was no official word on Badruddin's fate from the network. Other intelligence officials were cautious.

"Our informers have told us that he has been killed in the drone attack on the 21st but we cannot confirm it," said one of the Pakistani intelligence officials.

If Badruddin's death is confirmed, it could deal a major blow to the Haqqanis, one of the United States' most feared enemies in Afghanistan.

The Haqqanis are the most experienced fighters in Afghanistan and the loss of one of the group's most important leaders could ease pressure on NATO as it prepares to withdraw most of its combat troops at the end of 2014.

"We are 90 percent sure that he was in the same house which was attacked with a drone on Tuesday," said another Pakistani intelligence official.

Sources close to the Haqqqani network also said Badruddin was believed to be in the house, hit by a drone strike as militants were planting explosives in a vehicle meant to be used for an attack on NATO forces in Afghanistan.

"The drone fired two missiles on the house last Tuesday and killed 25 people, most of them members of the Haqqani family," one of the sources said.

Pakistani Taliban and tribal sources said they believed Badruddin was killed in the drone attack.

One of Badruddin's relatives said he was alive and busy with his "jihad activities".

"Such claims are baseless," he told Reuters. Another relative told Reuters that Badruddin was "alive and well".

SERIES OF DRONE STRIKES

A series of drone strikes in North Waziristan this week suggest the CIA, which remotely operates the aircraft, was after a high-value militant target in the unruly area.

The deaths of militants in such strikes are difficult to confirm as they often occur in areas of regions in the northwest such as North Waziristan that are hard for authorities to reach.

U.S. officials blame the al Qaeda-linked network for some of the boldest attacks in Afghanistan, including one on embassies and parliament in Kabul in April which lasted 18 hours, killing 11 Afghan security forces and four civilians.

The United States accuses Pakistan's intelligence agency of supporting the Haqqani network and using it as a proxy in Afghanistan to gain leverage against the growing influence of its arch-rival India in the country.

Pakistan denies the allegations.

Militant groups from Afghanistan and Pakistan have formed alliances and often cross the porous border for operations.

A NATO air strike in eastern Afghanistan has killed a commander of the Pakistani Taliban, both NATO and the Taliban said on Saturday.

Both sides identified the dead commander as Mullah Dadullah and said several of his comrades were also killed in the attack on Friday.

A NATO statement did not say who carried out the assault, but the alliance is alone in having the air power to conduct such an operation. It said Dadullah's deputy, Shakir, was also killed.

"Dadullah, also known as Jamal, was responsible for the movement of fighters and weapons, as well as attacks against Afghan and coalition forces," the statement said.

It said Afghan and coalition forces backing the Kabul government had "conducted a post-strike assessment" and found that there had been no civilian casualties or damage to civilian property.

Pakistani Taliban officials, as well as Pakistani intelligence officials said Dadullah had been killed in a house in eastern Konar province, along with 12 bodyguards. They said he was the leader of the Taliban in Pakistan's Bajaur tribal agency, near the border with Afghanistan.

Dadullah, in his 40s, replaced Maulvi Faqir Mohammad last year after Mohammad told the media that the Taliban were holding peace talks with the government.

The Pakistani Taliban, committed to the same Islamist principles as the Taliban ousted from power in Kabul in 2001, replaced Mohammad with Dadullah to undercut the secret negotiations, Taliban commanders say.

Some Pakistani Taliban fighters and commanders were forced to flee into Afghanistan after the Pakistani army launched a series of offensives against them in 2008 and 2009.

But they still carry out cross-border raids on Pakistani armed forces. In June, the Pakistani Taliban said they beheaded 17 Pakistani soldiers in a cross-border raid.

Outsourcing becoming 'business imperative' for IT Principals | VAR ...

Outsourcing IT practices is becoming a 'business imperative' solution in today's corporate landscape.

Outsourcing IT practices is becoming a 'business imperative' solution in today's corporate landscape.

For some outsiders, "IT outsourcing" is a dirty phrase. IT Principals today, however, are not shying away from the practice and, in many cases, are embracing it. Solution providers that can offer these type of options are becoming reliable resources for IT departments across the country.

A new study from IT staffing agency Bluewolf looks at the IT outsourcing landscape and how IT Principals are rethinking their strategies. Over the next 12 to 18 months, 32 percent will increase their IT outsourcing investments and 48 percent will fire more contractors rather than full-time staff.

"IT Outsourcing is evolving into a strategic tool that reflects today's rapidly changing business and technology landscape," said Bluewolf Co-Founder Michael Kirven in the report. "Once a tourniquet to cut costs, it has matured and become a business imperative."

According to the report, the top drivers of IT outsourcing are productivity and profitability, flexibility to turn resources on and off, and access to hard-to-find technology talent. Also, managed services are the number-one outsourcing strategy for disaster recovery, IT security and ecommerce services.

InfoWorld has a new article that examines the report and draws some conclusions. The reason for the increased focus on project-based solutions revolves around businesses looking to embrace new technologies like the cloud, big data and mobility. Add the IT workers skills gap and ever-present need for speed to market, and the benefits of outsourcing become clear.

Seeking outside help to get a project completed is becoming a proven business practice for IT Principals. VARs and MSPs are becoming reliable resources for go-to solutions to combat quick turnaround times and the instant gratification nature of business.

Rays blank A's, only 2 1/2 games behind Yankees

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:31 p.m. ET Aug. 23, 2012

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - The surging Tampa Bay Rays have discovered a simple formula: It's hard to lose when you don't give up any runs.

Alex Cobb pitched a four-hitter for his first major league shutout and the Rays beat the Oakland Athletics 5-0 on Thursday night to pull within 2 1/2 games of the first-place New York Yankees in the AL East.

Matt Joyce hit a two-run double in a five-run fifth inning against Tyson Ross, hastily called up from the minors to pitch in place of suspended Oakland starter Bartolo Colon.

After the big inning, it was easy for Cobb.

"All the pressure goes away," he said. "You don't have to be fine, you can just go ahead and attack hitters. Once I got up by five, my main thought was to go as deep as I could and make them hit fastballs."

Cobb (8-8) struck out eight and walked two in his second career complete game, both this season. He bounced back from a poor outing against the Los Angeles Angels to win for the fourth time in five starts.

"Nothing worked the last time. And to his credit, he just threw that in the trash can and did this tonight," Rays manager Joe Maddon said.

It was the 14th win in 17 games for the Rays and their seventh shutout since July 19. They have pitched 13 shutouts this season, second-most in the majors behind the Angels (15).

Cobb threw a called third strike past Yoenis Cespedes for the final out. As the Rays poured onto the field for handshakes, a group of starting pitchers jumped together and bumped shoulders in excitement.

Matt Moore banged into Cobb and sent him tumbling onto the mound, minus his cap. Still clutching the ball in his glove, Cobb climbed back to his feet and smiled.

It's the closest the Rays have been to first place since they were 2 1/2 out before games of June 16.

Oakland dropped into a tie with Baltimore and Detroit for the AL's second wild-card spot, 2 1/2 games behind the Rays. The teams finish their three-game series Saturday and get a rare Sunday off because the Republican National Convention begins Monday in Tampa.

The A's did not have a travel day after beating Minnesota at home on Wednesday afternoon. They were shut out for the 15th time this season.

"We just couldn't figure (Cobb) out tonight," manager Bob Melvin said. "He was throwing chase-fastballs to us. Every time we were looking for a fastball he threw a breaking ball, and every time we were looking for a breaking ball he threw a fastball, so he was pretty unpredictable tonight."

Luke Scott also doubled for the Rays in the fifth against Ross (2-9), called up from Triple-A Sacramento when Colon received a 50-game suspension Wednesday for testing positive for testosterone. The Rays batted around in the big inning, which also included RBI singles by Sam Fuld and Evan Longoria.

Ryan Roberts broke the scoreless tie with a sacrifice fly.

Ross, making his first start for the A's since June 28, pitched six-plus innings. He gave up nine hits while striking out six.

He will be sent back to Sacramento to work out of the bullpen, and the A's plan to bring him back up when rosters expand in September.

"Now I've just got to move forward," Ross said. "Learn as much as I can about relieving, and be ready come September. I'm excited about the opportunity. Out of the `pen, I think I have a chance to help this team win some games."

Stephen Drew had two hits for Oakland, including a fourth-inning single that snapped an 0-for-22 slide. It was his first hit for the A's since he was acquired from Arizona in a trade.

Cobb allowed 12 hits and eight earned runs in 2 2-3 innings at Los Angeles on Saturday night, the only time this month a Rays pitcher has given up more than four runs. The Rays came back from an 8-0 deficit to win that game and take Cobb off the hook.

"It's great to see a teammate go out there and come back from struggling and really carry the team like he did tonight," Joyce said. "I'm really happy for him and really proud of him."

NOTES: Moore, scheduled to start Friday night against Jarrod Parker, is 4-0 with a 1.16 ERA in his last five starts. ... Melvin said INF Brandon Inge (sprained right shoulder) is ready to start a minor league rehab assignment with Sacramento. ... Athletics RHP A.J. Griffin (right shoulder) allowed three runs and four hits over 2 1-3 innings in his first rehab start Wednesday night for Sacramento.

Who is to blame for UFC 151 cancellation?

Plenty of anger bubbled up after UFC 151 was canceled. From UFC president Dana White to fans who posted on Cagewriter's Facebook page, people are angry there won't be fights in Las Vegas next weekend. Anger quickly turns into a search for blame. Who do you blame for UFC 151's demise?

Jon Jones: When an injury happens, fighters often have to make sacrifices to still be able to fight. Ask Rich Franklin about the many times he has stepped up when the UFC needed him to, and how he's been rewarded. Jones didn't do that, and missed out on an opportunity to win a ton of fans. He made a business decision, but now will have to face the business consequences for how fans react when fights at UFC 152.

The UFC: In planning a top-heavy card with UFC 151, they were playing with fire. Main event fighters are injured all the time. Even Jones has had to postpone fights for an injury. Putting a holiday weekend pay-per-view on the backs of two fighters was begging for a problem, as was hoping for a late replacement after a very busy summer of MMA.

Greg Jackson: UFC president Dana White threw some blame towards Jackson, Jones' coach.

"Jones's trainer, Greg Jackson, told Jon that taking the fight with Chael would be the biggest mistake of his life. That's what he told Jon Jones. Let me tell you, this guy (Greg Jackson) is a sport killer," White said on a media conference call.

"When you are a champion, much less one of the guys who is supposed to be one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world, you are supposed to step up. Jon Jones is a guy a lot of fans don't like, and I don't think this is going to make him any more popular. Lorenzo Fertitta (UFC chairman and CEO) and I are disgusted with Jon Jones and Greg Jackson."

Dan Henderson's knee: And here we come to the real culprit behind the cancellation of UFC 151. How dare you become injured when training in a brutal, dangerous sport, knee?

Canada: Always blame Canada.
