Adding a '3D print' button to animation software

ScienceDaily (July 31, 2012) ? Watch out, Barbie: omnivorous beasts are assembling in a 3D printer near you. Tool developed at Harvard turns animated characters into fully articulated action figures.

A group of graphics experts led by computer scientists at Harvard have created an add-on software tool that translates video game characters -- -- or any other three-dimensional animations -- -- into fully articulated action figures, with the help of a 3D printer.

The project is described in detail in the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Transactions on Graphics and will be presented at the ACM SIGGRAPH conference on August 7.

Besides its obvious consumer appeal, the tool constitutes a remarkable piece of code and an usual conceptual exploration of the virtual and physical worlds.

"In animation you're not necessarily trying to model the physical world perfectly; the model only has to be good enough to convince your eye," explains lead author Moritz B?cher, a graduate student in computer science at SEAS. "In a virtual world, you have all this freedom that you don't have in the physical world. You can make a character so anatomically skewed that it would never be able to stand up in real life, and you can make deformations that aren't physically possible. You could even have a head that isn't attached to its body, or legs that occasionally intersect each other instead of colliding."

Returning a virtual character to the physical world therefore turns the traditional animation process on its head, in a sort of reverse rendering, as the image that's on the screen must be adapted to accommodate real-world constraints.

B?cher and his coauthors demonstrated their new method using characters from Spore, an evolution-simulation video game. Spore allows players to create a vast range of creatures with numerous limbs, eyes, and body segments in almost any configuration, using a technique called procedural animation to quickly and automatically animate whatever body plan it receives.

As with most types of computer animation, the characters themselves are just "skins" -- meshes of polygons -- that are manipulated like marionettes by an invisible skeleton.

"As an animator, you can move the skeletons and create weight relationships with the surface points," says B?cher, "but the skeletons inside are non-physical with zero-dimensional joints; they're not useful to our fabrication process at all. In fact, the skeleton frequently protrudes outside the body entirely."

B?cher tackled the fabrication problem with his Ph.D. adviser, Hanspeter Pfister, Gordon McKay Professor of Computer Science at SEAS. They were joined by Bernd Bickel and Doug James at the Technische Universit?t Berlin and Cornell University, respectively.

This team of computer graphics experts developed a software tool that achieves two things: it identifies the ideal locations for the action figure's joints, based on the character's virtual articulation behavior, and then it optimizes the size and location of those joints for the physical world. For instance, a spindly arm might be too thin to hold a robust joint, and the joints in a curving spine might collide with each other if they are too close.

The software uses a series of optimization techniques to generate the best possible model, incorporating both hinges and ball-and-socket joints. It also builds some friction into these surfaces so that the printed figure will be able to hold its poses.

The tool also perfects the model's skin texture. Procedurally animated characters tend to have a very roughly defined, low-resolution skin to enable rendering in real time. Details and textures are typically added through a type of virtual optical illusion: manipulating the normals that determine how light reflects off the surface. In order to have these details show up in the 3D print, the software analyzes that map of normals and translates it into a realistic surface texture.

Then the 3D printer sets to work, and out comes a fully assembled, robust, articulated action figure, bringing the virtual world to life.

"With an animation, you always have to view it on a two-dimensional screen, but this allows you to just print it and take an actual look at it in 3D," says B?cher. "I think that's helpful to the artists and animators, to see how it actually feels in reality and get some feedback. Right now, perhaps they can print a static scene, just a character in one stance, but they can't see how it really moves. If you print one of these articulated figures, you can experiment with different stances and movements in a natural way, as with an artist's mannequin."

B?cher's model does not allow deformations beyond the joints, so squishy, stretchable bodies are not yet captured in this process. But that type of printed character might be possible by incorporating other existing techniques.

For instance, in 2010, Pfister, B?cher, and Bickel were part of a group of researchers who replicated an entire flip-flop sandal using a multi-material 3D printer. The printed sandal mimicked the elasticity of the original foam rubber and cloth. With some more development, a later iteration of the "3D-print button" could include this capability.

"Perhaps in the future someone will invent a 3D printer that prints the body and the electronics in one piece," B?cher muses. "Then you could create the complete animated character at the push of a button and have it run around on your desk."

Harvard's Office of Technology Development has filed a patent application and is working with the Pfister Lab to commercialize the new technology by licensing it to an existing company or by forming a start-up. Their near-term areas of interest include cloud-based services for creating highly customized, user-generated products, such as toys, and enhancing existing animation and 3D printer software with these capabilities.

The research was supported by the National Science Foundation, Pixar, and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation.

Execution Management & Strategic Planning l AchieveIt

By Scott Regan, Founder & Chief Execution Officer, AchieveIt

In recent weeks, we have been making our way through the four stages of cultural evolution that are often experienced by organizations that implement our best-of-breed Execution Management System:

  • Culture of Collaboration
  • Culture of Accountability
  • Culture of Execution
  • Culture of Innovation

In this blog, we focus on the move from a culture of accountability to a culture of execution. Organizations that evolve from a culture of collaboration to a culture of accountability are able to successfully focus on strategic work rather than just busy work. They move from doing a lot of things, to doing the right things that get measurable and tangible results. Characteristic elements of a culture of accountability include:

  • Organizational, departmental, and individual scorecards
  • Dashboards that track results over time
  • Objectives that are measureable and quantifiable
  • Strategies and tactics that support the objectives
  • Objectives, strategies, and tactics assigned to individual owners with firm due dates
  • Progress review meetings at least monthly

Evolving to a Culture of Execution

To move from a culture of accountability to a culture of execution requires that strategy gets pushed down to the front lines. Holding your management team accountable for results is important ? which is the focus of accountability cultures ? but getting everyone in the organization involved in strategy implementation elevates execution and creates a distinct business advantage. But pushing strategy to the front lines is no easy task. First and foremost, it requires that the organization?s mission, vision, and strategy are all intertwined and that the organization has taken the necessary steps to ensure that every employee knows how he or she helps fulfill the mission and achieve the vision through their daily jobs. This is a prerequisite to developing a culture of execution; if the primary focus of the organization?s employees is to live the mission and vision through the work they perform, then the company is well on its way to developing a culture of execution ? especially if mission and vision is the foundation of the organization?s strategy.

With mission, vision, and strategy aligned, it is then important to cascade strategic imperatives from the executive management team to middle management to front-line staff. If customer satisfaction is a strategic imperative, all employees should understand how they can impact and improve customer satisfaction on a daily basis. In a hospital, this means that everyone from physicians to housekeepers are provided tools and methods to improve patient satisfaction. In a bank, everyone from call center staff to tellers should be aware of how a single interaction with a customer can impact satisfaction scores. Customer service recovery programs should be hardwired and available to all employees. Customer service training should begin with employee orientation. And successes and failure should be shared across the organization.

Companies that effectively involve all employees in the implementation of strategy and the achievement of organizational objectives will develop within their employees a sense of purpose and meaning, urgency to get the right things done the right way, and a greater level of satisfaction for their jobs. What?s more, these same companies will develop within their organizations a culture of execution that enables them to accelerate business results.

Romney: Overpaying taxes disqualifies president

Associated Press

Posted on July 29, 2012 at 3:01 PM

Updated today at 9:30 PM

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Mitt Romney says that if he paid more taxes than were required, he wouldn't be qualified to be president.

The U.S. presidential candidate tells ABC News that American voters expect candidates to pay "only what the tax code requires." He says he hasn't calculated what percentage of his income was paid in taxes but says that he's been audited.

Romney's vast personal wealth has been an issue in the campaign.

Democrats have criticized him for paying only 13.9 percent of his income in taxes during the one year his taxes have been made public.

Romney says he will release an additional year of returns before Election Day. That has left some questioning whether Romney pays a smaller share than other Americans.

Musician Athletes: 22 Artists Who Also Excelled in Sports

Getty Images

With the London Olympics kicking off, there's going to be plenty of hubbub about who's performing what at the opening and closing ceremonies. While that's all well and good, we thought it was more interesting to look at which musicians could hold their own in an athletic event.

It turns out that there are quite a few artists who can run, throw, hit, kick and, yes, fence just as well as some of the best in the sport. Some were captains of high school teams, others set records and a few might have gone pro if their lives shook out a little differently. So, with that in mind, check out our gallery of musicians with athletic pasts. Some might even surprise you.

No matter if it truly is for the internet site or for the online business, online marketing in addition to Seo is normally critical. The truth is, without having these two, an online business or a site will turn out to be useless since it can by no means attract traffic. If these internet websites or online business has no traffic, then that signifies they have no clients and with out customers then it is going to be challenging for them to survive lengthy in the market. Hence, if a business or a web-site wants to attract more traffic and gain revenue, then they would have to look at search engine optimization services .
?
Why Is It Certainly Required?
?
Sites and online corporations are ranked by several search engines based on their algorithm and these algorithm will consider how beneficial the content of the site towards the query of their user along with how it could give a better browsing encounter. Furthermore, a better rank will be favorable to the business or the internet site because it would be less difficult for any prospective clients to locate what they were aiming for in the starting ? some thing that the business or the web-site can provide. The more users which will view their web pages from search engine outcomes, the more probabilities in producing revenue for their business.
?
How Will SEO Work?
?
Usually, Seo follows to essential, major steps. The first thing SEOs will do is the fact that they are going to make a total analysis with the web-site. SEOs will have to analyse the website?s HTML code, its style as well as any other issues that could have been the cause why the web site has a low rank in search engine final results. Once the analysis is complete; the next factor is going to be enhancing the web site according to the analysis. Sometimes, social media optimization, online video streams and some new attributes might be added to ensure that it will improve the rankings of the web-site.
?
Next approach is related to the registration of the web-site into search engines. So that the internet site will probably be correctly registered in search engine final results, the Seo will use the right keywords for the web site. It begins with the proper research of the possible keywords that would help boost the rankings of a website. Then they will incorporate it in the content material, title and others. These keywords have to be also used in the domain with the web page and their subsequent pages.
?
Whether or not it truly is for online marketing or for making an online presence, a web page will constantly be not sufficient. Since the Internet could be the most potent method in promoting a business, it would be bad for a business if they don?t know how to use it efficiently and properly. Indeed, businesses can nonetheless depend on email marketing and other online marketing methods, however it would nonetheless be considerably better if their web-site will use Search engine optimization services.

Creepy robot baby now creepier with torso and floppy arms

6 hrs.

A robot baby being built as part of a neuroscience research program in Japan has just gotten a torso, including arms that flop around like an infant?s sans swaddle.

Affeto, the robo-baby, is creepy in its realism, which is what the team from Osaka University aims to accomplish as they use robotics to study ?how humans? higher cognitive functions develop,? according to a project description.

Ultimately, the robot will be used in behavioral experiments. For now, the researchers are trying to ?build a realistic child robot with a muscle-skeletal system.??

The torso?s flexibility comes from 22 pneumatic actuators in its body.

In the video below you can see that Affeto?s torso is approaching the realistic stage. At one point, it hits itself in the face with ?babyish looseness,? Endgadget notes.?

The robot?s face has the thousand-mile stare of a well satiated or exhausted infant, but that may be because the team has yet to pair the torso with the robotic head, which was demonstrated in Feb.?2011.

Stay tuned.

Can You Call a Car With Salva... / Write for Ten

Can You Call a Car With Salvage Title A Worthy Experience?

The answer to this question could be both yes and no. If you are smart enough to find a jewel in a collection of junk cars, you would call salvage cars as a worthy thing; however, if you do not have the proper knack, then cannot be a worthy thing. Smart buyers and skilled thing find this option a superior deal to buy cheap cars. Check the following factors and decide whether visiting any salvage auction is a proper deal for you or not.

It could be mysterious deal: The basic problem with salvage title is that it you cannot find its history. You may be surprised to see that many of the cars with little bit issues get the title of salvage. Secondly, the salvage cars can come with an amount of serious problems seen in different damages found in electrical systems which could have embarked with the flooding and other natural and manmade disasters. So buying a salvage car from car auctions could be a roll of the dice.

The insurance issues: There are some insurance companies that render salvage cars with bigger premiums taking care of the safety and other concerns. While others would pay anything on claims since they consider the vehicle without any value. At the end of the day, a salvage vehicle at special cars for auction could be a worthy thing if you could have done a right degree of homework and find some insurer who is ready to render a reasonably priced cover for the car.

The resale usefulness: These cars are just not right for your resale value as a wide range of buyers simply fear buying these cars or even visiting at any salvage cars for sale auction. The online stores do not entertain such cars and simply avoid dealing with the cars for sale for salvage.

Ways to make fine profit: Regardless of the demerits attached to the salvage title, you can find ways of making profit from these cars. You get to see a wide range of scenarios where any person with budget can for sure end up saving fine amount by purchasing a salvage car at the copart auto auction. The Copart vehicle is to use it for daily commuting purpose, while keeping the mileage down of your brand unknown vehicle or any other high helpfulness car. By doing so, the helpfulness of your brand unfamiliar car would remain high with low mileage thus end up getting good quote on your resale.

Hospitals wipe out, limit bills for Colo. victims

DENVER - Some of the victims fighting for their lives after being wounded in the movie theater shooting rampage may face another challenge when they get out of the hospital: enormous medical bills without the benefit of health insurance.

Members of the public, along with Warner Bros., the studio that released the Batman movie "The Dark Knight Rises," have contributed nearly $2 million to help victims, though it's not clear how much of that will cover medical expenses. One family is raising money on its own online.

And three of the five hospitals that treated victims said Wednesday they will limit or completely wipe out medical bills.

Some of the victims, however, still face a long recovery ahead and the associated medical costs ? without health insurance. There's no exact count of how many of them don't have insurance but statistics suggest many of them might not be covered.

Nearly one in three Coloradans, or about 1.5 million, either have no health insurance or have coverage that is inadequate, according to a 2011 report by The Colorado Trust, a health care advocacy group.

The highest uninsured rate was among adults between 18 and 34 and many of those injured in the shootings are in that age group.

State officials said they are not sure whether any of the victims qualify for emergency Medicaid assistance available to needy patients. Victims could also get financial assistance from a state program that helps people hurt during crimes, including lost wages and counselling.

Among the uninsured victims of the movie theater attack is a 23-year-old aspiring comic, Caleb Medley, who is in critical condition with a head wound and whose wife, Katie, gave birth to their first child, Hugo, on Tuesday.

His family and friends said they have set a goal of raising $500,000 to cover his hospital bills and other expenses and were over halfway there on Wednesday.

"All the money that is donated is going straight to Caleb, Katie and Hugo to help them with medical bills, getting back on their feet, help with the baby items," friend Michael West said. "Anything and everything that they need."

Children's Hospital Colorado announced it would use donations and its charity care fund to cover the medical expenses of the uninsured. For those who do have insurance, the hospital says it will waive all co-pays.

"We are committed to supporting these families as they heal," according to a statement from the hospital, which treated six shooting victims.

HealthOne, which owns the Medical Center of Aurora and Swedish Medical Center, also says it will limit or eliminate charges based on the individual circumstances of the patients. Those hospitals have treated 22 shooting victims. However, the company cautioned its policy may not apply to all doctors working in its hospitals.

The other two hospitals, Denver Health Medical Center and University of Colorado Hospital, where Medley is, wouldn't directly say whether they would assist shooting victims. However, they are the state's top two safety net hospitals and provided combined $750 million in free care in 2011.

Hospitals are required by federal law to stabilize patients during emergencies without regard to their ability to pay.

"The issue most probably facing the hospitals and patients in a situation like Aurora is what comes after 'stabilization,'" said Dr. Howard Brody, director of the Institute for the Medical Humanities at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston and a frequent critic of excessive medical costs.

"Many of these people I assume will need prolonged and expensive rehabilitation after their immediate injuries are dealt with, and that seems precisely what hospitals today are less and less willing to cover out of their own funds, and no law requires that they do so, as far as I am aware," he said.

Medley is in a medically induced coma, but West said he has been showing signs of improvement, relying less on a ventilator to breathe. Medley's wife, 21-year-old Katie Medley, gave birth on Tuesday, one floor above his room at University of Colorado Hospital.

Standup comedian Gabriel Iglesias, who has appeared on Comedy Central, planned to headline a Denver fundraiser for Medley next week.

The fundraising might actually make Medley ineligible for some income-related assistance. His family and all other victims are already meeting with victim advocates, the case workers who deal with people hurt during crimes. The advocates determine what services they need and what assistance they qualify for.

"We have individuals who will need a lifetime of care, or a lifetime of accommodation, and our job is to make sure those needs are met," said Karla Maraccini, deputy director for community partnerships in the office of Gov. John Hickenlooper.

Protein Refolds To Perform Second Job

60-Second Science60-Second Science | More Science

The transcription factor RfaH unfolds and then refolds into a new conformation to become a translation factor. Ian Chant reports.

More 60-Second Science

Secret identities aren?t just for superheroes anymore. Researchers have found that a protein present in everything from amoebas to people is living a double life. Once it binds to DNA, the protein, called RfaH, rips apart?and then refolds into a different shape, to do a different job.

RfaH is a transcription protein?attached to or freed from a stretch of DNA, it determines if a gene is expressed or not. But once the protein has carried out its task, its helical structure unravels. Within seconds, it refolds into a barrel structure, which has a new role, this time in translation, where it helps the cell produce amino acids for new proteins. The study is in the journal Cell. [Bj?rn M. Burmann et al, An ? Helix to ? Barrel Domain Switch Transforms the Transcription Factor RfaH into a Translation Factor]

The next step is to find out if the barrel can refold into the helix. After that, researchers want to see if proteins similar to RfaH?which are present in all life on Earth?are capable of comparable molecular contortion. Which would mean a lot more bang for our protein buck.

Broadcom promises triple-speed 5G WiFi for mobiles in early 2013

Broadcom promises triplespeed 5G WiFi for mobiles in early 20135G WiFi, aka 802.11ac, aka muy rapido. We don't just want it in routers and laptops, we want it everywhere -- which is why Broadcom's firm date of Q1 2013 for its BCM4335 mobile chip is good news. The add-on belongs to a mainstream line of 40nm combo radios that handle WiFi (including regular 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands), Bluetooth 4.0 and FM, which means there's every likelihood it'll appear in numerous smartphones and tablets soon after production starts. Broadcom promises tripled transfer speeds, "dramatically" improved range and "six times greater" power efficiency compared to Wireless N, but then again, so does the competition -- and a company like Qualcomm may be able to deliver it in even fewer nanometers.

Tips: Ed Yong's On The Origin Of Science Writers

Tips is a series which aims to provide young and early-career science writers with, well, tips to aid them in their budding careers. The series will attempt to link out to existing resources available online.

Today, we feature On the Origin of Science Writers, a blog post or rather, a comment thread, initiated by popular science writer, Ed Yong on his blog. The thread showcases a variety of pathways to becoming a science writer written exclusively by science writers themselves?150 of them.

?

?How do I become a science writer?? That?s the question! When it pops into your head it might not be easy to figure out a decent answer. But worry no more as Ed Yong and 150 other science writers come to the rescue.

In On the Origin of Science Writers, Ed asks science writers who have experience in the field, two questions:

  1. How did you make your start?
  2. What advice would you give to people in the same position?

Until now, 150 science writers have answered these questions. They include Carl Zimmer, Marc Henderson, John Rennie, Steve Silberman, Christopher Mims. It?s a very diverse bunch and you will find writers who tend to specialise in different fields of science as well, all happily giving advice.

The comments are diverse as the writers who?ve contributed to thread. Of different styles, lengths, etcetera, they are catered to a variety of potential science writers.

Apart from being a wealth of advice though, the thread is also inspiring. Reading how such great science writers started out will surely inspire you. And, if they could do it, so can you.

Here?s a snapshot of the comments:

Carl Zimmer:

I backed into my job by fortunate accident. As a kid, science was an important part of my nerdy regime, but I never actually considered becoming a scientist. In college I was preoccupied with writing, cranking out so-so short stories and interning for a local paper one summer. But I still had time for physics and a few other science classes. A couple years out of college, intent on finding a magazine job, I took a test to be a copy editor at Discover. I proved to be a terrible copy editor, but I was allowed to cling to a job, fact-checking and then starting to write short pieces. A very lucky break: I was hooked.

I talked in more detail about becoming a science writer in 2009 at the University of British Columbia. UBC made a podcast of the talk, which, if you are interested, you can listen to here:?http://bit.ly/ZimmerUBC

Carl regularly contributes articles to the New York Times and Discover magazine among others, blogs at The Loom and has written several books including Microcosm and The Tangled Bank.

Steve Silberman (excerpt):

I took a somewhat unusual path to becoming a science writer.? Like many of my peers, I was fascinated with science as a kid, but a better way to say it would be that I was fascinated by the universe and how it works. I read cloud atlases and books on weather avidly, pestered the adults around me with questions constantly, and sent away for little kits in the mail to make your own rubber balls. I abused chemistry sets and lit fires in the backyard with Estes model-rocket engines. The Edmund Scientific catalog ? with its thrilling pictures of Van de Graaf generators, telescopes, and Geiger counters ? was my bible. Many people assumed I would become a scientist when I grew up.

At the same time, however, I loved language.? Before I was even old enough to talk, my late father taught me to love words by reading James Joyce?s ?Ulysses? aloud while carrying me on his shoulders. As an English professor at a state college in New Jersey, he showed generations of inner-city students how to see their own struggles reflected in the travails of Dickens? textile workers and the crew of Melville?s ?Pequod.? [...]

Christopher Mims (excerpt):

I started in college. I wrote a ?humor? column for my school paper?s editorial section. It was (sarcastically) called Smoking is Cool and it was mostly me ranting about things that enraged me. I was so ignorant of journalism that I never realized that writing editorials disqualified me from writing news, not that I was terribly interested in doing that ? it was much more fun to just make things up. (Now that we have journalists who also blog, and activist journalists, and Journolist and Fox News and all the rest, no one even pretends to be objective anymore so I guess I got the last laugh on that one.)

Through dumb luck my (pre-assigned) freshman advisor happened to run her own undergraduate science initiative, so one summer she hired me to be a science writer. All I did all day long was interview scientists and write up the results as Q&A?s and as-told-tos. It was great practice. [...]

Head off to the On the Origin of Science Writers to read Ed?s own explanation of this thread and all the comments.

Regent Law Family Restoration: Family Challenges to End of Life ...

Exploring legal and public policy issues of elder law in class is one aspect students appreciate at Regent University School of Law. Amy K. Vitale, Regent Law Juris Doctor 2012, focused on policy implications in her research on life-saving measures. Researching the use of routine medical overtreatment which can in turn foster euthanasia, her article is entitled, "My Achy-Breaky Heart: How routine medical overtreatment has forced the need for a complex legal approach to euthanasia." Vitale discusses the challenges to considering a lifesaving medical invention that may prolong life to the point of causing a patient to instead suffer longer for death.

The question every patient faces is whether life-lengthening measures are always the most desirable in end of life decision making. Families and individual patients struggle with these decisions. Vitale writes, "End of life decision-making is inevitably painful and is wrought with difficult and complicated questions of what medical treatment to pursue or not pursue. Modern medical technology is among the many marvelous advantages of life in the twenty-first century. Despite its acknowledgeable flaws, the American medical system still affords greater opportunities for medical treatment than at any other point or place in history. However, though modern medical technology has made what was once thought impossible, possible, it has also opened the door to scores of new ethical issues ? ethical issues for which academics, medical professionals, politicians, and lawyers have struggled to build a functional framework. The tireless application of medical technology that has advanced and prolonged human life has also forced a societal and legal debate over whether a person may deem their life so unlivable as to end it voluntarily." Read her entire article here.

Families and individuals facing these challenging questions are not alone. With the assistance of good doctors and lawyers, and spiritual counsel, medical decision making, though on a new horizon, can bring families restorative powers for loved ones even in end of life decision making.

For one year, West Linn waives permit fees for home-based ...

With the long-term goal of sparking business growth in WestLinn, the city has granted a yearlong reprieve for business owners in need ofhome occupation permits and licenses.

The program, which began on Sunday, enables home-basedbusiness owners to obtain the required permit or renewal for free, bypassing cityfees. in addition, the program offers amnesty to unlicensed business owners, allowing them to apply without penalty. the fee holiday will run through June30, 2013.

Business owners in West Linn pay between $36 and $138 for licenses, required to be renewed annually. in a normal year, home-based business ownersshoulder a second permit fee ? $100 the first year and $10 for a renewal. Theyearlong program will equate to a $6,800 loss in revenue for the city, staffestimate.

But West Linn?s new economic development director, ChrisKerr, expects it to pay off in the long run.

Kerr proposed the fee holiday ? his first project sincebecoming economic development director at the start of June ? after noticingareas to improve on in the city?s licensing process. Businesses needed a clearbenefit from it, he thought. ?It seems like a resource the city should betapping into.?

Originally, Kerr suggested the city waive fees for allbusiness licenses, in addition to home occupation permits. However, theresulting loss of $41,000 in city revenue was too much for city council toswallow. on June 25, council approved the amended fee holiday that excludeswaiving the business license fee.

The fee waiver for home-based businesses will encourage moreowners to apply, Kerr said, providing a more factual number of such endeavorsin West Linn. currently, out of 1,245 licensed businesses in the city, 423 arelocated in residences.

With a broader inventory of businesses, city staff canbetter identify owners? needs. For example, Kerr said, if he notices a group ofhome-based baking businesses, staff could work on establishing a communitykitchen or a store front the bakers could lease for a month to give their goodsmore visibility. Staff also hope to connect small business owners with helpfulresources and aid in marketing.

?Part of it,? Kerr said, ?is creating the idea that the cityis a little more business friendly.?

President Obama's Covert Zeal for Abortion

23 Jul 2012, 11:04 AM PDT post a comment

President Obama similarly doesn't talk about abortion much. He famously tried to?avoid the question in 2008 when Pastor Rick Warren asked him what rights,?if any, unborn children have. "The answer to that question is above my?pay grade," he said then. With his strong election victory, Barack Obama?was promoted to the office where the buck stops, where such questions?demand an answer. His answer has been clear: none. The unborn have no?rights at any time, in any context.

President Obama has been the most pro-abortion president?in history. That?was a distinction not easily won, especially after eight years of Bill?and Hillary Clinton. They famously said abortion should be "safe, legal, and rare." That seemed to be a middle path. But the only place they made?abortion rare was in Antarctica. President Clinton sent out the Red Cable?to all U.S. Embassies ordering them to press their host countries to?make abortion?on demand legal and paid for by the state.?

Yet, Hillary told Newsweek abortion is "wrong" (October 31, 1994 issue).?She only said it once in her entire career. Still, she said it.?

Barack Obama has never said that. From his first public office, he has?been an advocate for abortion on demand. He led the fight in the?Illinois State Senate to deny protection for newborn children who?survive abortion?attempts. These children are U.S. citizens under the?Fourteenth Amendment. And just as too many states denied "equal?protection of the laws" to black Americans under a century of unjust Jim?Crow laws, Barack Obama denied protection of Illinois laws to newborns in?the Land of Lincoln?because they?had been targeted for abortion. It is?tragically ironic that a disproportionate number of these late-term?botched abortions are performed on minority women.?

As president, Bill Clinton twice vetoed the ban on partial-birth abortions. Elena Kagan strongly urged him to veto the law.?President Obama elevated Kagan to the U.S. Supreme Court. This outspoken?advocate of partial-birth abortion, not surprisingly, voted to approve?Obamacare--the greatest expansion of abortion since Roe v. Wade. We can?have little doubt as to how Kagan will rule if the lawsuits filed by?dozens of Catholic dioceses make it to the Supreme Court. She is unlikely?to surprise and?shock any?liberal abortion advocates as Chief Justice?John Roberts shocked and appalled millions of pro-lifers with his last-minute shift of position. For pro-lifers, the shocks and the surprises?only come one way with the?Supreme Court. Liberal pro-abortion advocates?never find one of their own jumping the traces. They vote in lockstep to?uphold the Culture of Death.

Like the Clintons, President Obama opposed the ban on partial-birth abortions. Nurse Brenda Pratt Shafer described what she saw in?a partial-birth abortion. It requires re-reading now:?

I?stood at the doctor's side and watched him perform a?partial-birth abortion?on a woman who was six months pregnant. The?baby's heartbeat?was clearly?visible on the ultrasound screen. The?doctor delivered the?baby's body?and arms, everything but his little?head. The baby's body was moving. His little fingers were clasping?together. He was kicking his feet. The doctor took a pair of scissors?and inserted them into the back of the baby's head, and the baby's arms?jerked out in a flinch, a startle reaction, like a baby does when he?thinks that he might fall. Then the doctor opened the?scissors and?he?stuck the high-powered?suction tube into the hole and sucked the?baby's brains out. Now the baby was completely limp. I never went back?to the clinic. But I am still haunted by the face of that little boy.?It was the most perfect, angelic face I have ever seen.

Just reading about such a horror led pro-choice liberal columnist Richard?Cohen to oppose it. ?

...the fact remains that the anti-abortion people are on to something.?Late-term abortions may be necessary, but you cannot read about?them without feeling diminished as a human being. Something awful has?happened, and simply as a matter of principle we ought to be opposed. We?ought to say,?in short, that this procedure cannot be used--that?late-term abortions cannot be permitted at all--unless we absolutely have?no choice. ["Reason to?Shudder," Washington Post, July 4, 2000].?

Cohen said then that people who don't shudder at this nightmare make him?shudder. President Obama does not shudder. Nor does Justice Elena Kagan.?They have a cool and detached view. To them, the fetus has no rights,?ever. And "the right to choose" can mean the right to a dead child.?

From his first day in office until now, President Obama has quietly but?vigorously pushed the abortion agenda. He records promotional videos for?Planned Parenthood. This group kills 340,000 of the more than 1,200,000?unborn children killed each year by abortion. Under Obamacare, they will?be able to kill millions more.

(AP) ? After making history in Paris, Tour de France champion Bradley Wiggins is heading home to London in the hopes he can cap off his tremendous run of success with an Olympic gold medal.

The first Briton to win cycling's showcase event will start the Olympic time trial Aug. 1 as a big favorite for the gold medal, after dominating the event twice during the Tour de France.

The 32-year-old Londoner showed during the Tour that he can beat all comers in the race-against-the-clock, even after 2,175 miles of racing over three weeks in one of the ultimate endurance tests in all of sports.

After donning his winner's yellow jersey on the Champs-Elysees, Wiggins immediately began turning his focus to his Olympic race in just over a week. He even promised to forgo the Tour winner's traditional glass of champagne.

"Everything turns to the Olympics and I'll be out on the bike tomorrow and I've got an Olympic time trial to try and win," Wiggins said.

Sacrificing the traditional Tour winner's party was difficult but necessary, Wiggins said, because the Olympic gold "is a higher priority than anything else."

"It's a little weird to leave Paris without a party because it would be nice to spend time with the team and really enjoy it," Wiggins said.

Mark Cavendish, Wiggins' teammate on Team Sky, also is aiming to transition quickly from Parisian boulevards to English lanes.

The world champion from Britain's Isle of Man wants to follow up his dominating sprint victory on the Champs-Elysees on Sunday with a win in the Olympic road race on July 28. If anything, Cavendish is even more heavily favored to win the road race than Wiggins is in the time trial.

Regarded as the fastest man on a bike, the road world champion has not been as successful this year as in previous Tours. He kept his personal ambitions somewhat in check to put Wiggins in yellow during the Tour.

He still won three stages along the way, taking his career total to 23 and putting him in fourth place at only 27 years old. Any other cyclist would consider that a very successful Tour, but Cavendish admitted he felt frustrated at times not being able to nab five or six stage victories as he has during his domination of sprints in recent years.

Cavendish knew before the Tour this year's race would not be set up for him. He spent the first half of the season training specifically for the road race at the London Olympics, losing 9 pounds to be able to tackle the nine climbs of Box Hill in Surrey on Saturday.

Wiggins enjoyed a perfect Tour from the start and secured the victory with a dominating performance in Saturday's final time trial to extend his already commanding lead.

And with Cavendish having sacrificed some opportunities for more stage wins along the way by helping his teammate protect the yellow jersey, Wiggins was all too happy to pay him back over the final miles of the race ? normally a time when the winner is merely cruising along and already receiving congratulations from other riders.

"It's hard to take in as it happens," Wiggins said. "Every lap of the Champs-Elysees was goose-pimple stuff. We had a job to do with Mark today and we were all motivated to do that so it made it go a lot quicker. The concentration was high and for Mark to finish it off like that ... well, it couldn't get any better."

Cavendish ? widely regarded as the best sprinter in the world ? won the final stage of the Tour for the fourth year in a row. After Wiggins pulled back, Edvald Boasson Hagen delivered the perfect lead-out for Cavendish to sprint away from his rivals at the end of the 74.6-mile stage. Cavendish accelerated coming out of the final corner, never looked back and raised four fingers as he crossed the line.

"That was incredible, what a sight," Cavendish said. "The yellow jersey, Brad Wiggins pulling at the end after Chris Froome had been riding. ... I just gave everything to the line, I wanted it so bad. It's the cherry on top of an amazing Tour for us."

Froome, another British rider on Team Sky, finished second overall. The last time two riders from the same nation finished first and second in the Tour was in 1984, when Frenchman Laurent Fignon defeated Bernard Hinault.

Wiggins congratulated his teammates after crossing the line, gave a big hug to his wife and clutched the hands of their children.

The lanky Wiggins blew kisses and bowed to a sea of union jacks.

After a soprano sang the British anthem, Wiggins thanked the crowd with a touch of British humor.

"Cheers, have a safe journey home, don't get too drunk," said Wiggins, who wrote in his autobiography about overcoming drinking problems after his early successes in the Velodrome.

Wiggins' father died four years ago after struggling with alcohol and drug addiction.

Cavendish became the first reigning world champion to win on the Champs-Elysees.

"It's been incredible," Cavendish said. "We've come in with the aim of winning the yellow jersey. We got first and second on GC. We've won six stages as a team. It's a very successful Tour for Team Sky. Maybe there would've been more opportunities for sprints, but we won six stages. We've raised the profile of British cycling and it's been an incredible thing to be a part of."

The seven stage wins was a record haul for British riders in the Tour, beating the previous record of six stage wins ? all by Cavendish ? in 2009.

This time the victories were divided up between Cavendish (3), Wiggins (2), David Millar (1) and Froome (1).

All four, with Ian Stannard, will compete in Saturday's road race on the opening day of the Olympics with the aim of propelling Cavendish to another triumph.

"We won seven stages in total, that's one out of three stages won by a British rider," Cavendish said. "The guys in the Olympic team have one more job to do, but it's been an incredible few weeks for us."
