divorce bullying parenting advice teens

?

parenting, back to school, new mom ?I have a soon to be three year old son / only child. ?Since my husband started to travel a great deal for work (8 months now) my son has become a homebody, refusing to leave the house.? During the winter months, I just went with it. ?We stayed in, never going out to the library, gym, see friends (I was going crazy) but soon Spring arrived and he seemed a bit better.? Lately he?s reverted. ?All he wants to do is be home, watching Winnie the Pooh while playing with his cars.? The odd time we do go out to a farm / walk / visit a friend (you name it we try and do it) and he wants to go home as soon as we arrive.? I try and schedule play-dates but as soon as another boy bumps him or takes a toy, he gets upset and wants to go back in the house.

I have chosen to be a stay-at-home mum, thinking he and I would have great adventures, going on bike trails, me jogging with him in the stroller, going to dog parks ? but it?s been 8 months and I feel like it?s just easier to be at home ? I can clean the house, get some freelance work done, and let him do his thing, however not what I had in mind of how I saw myself parenting.

Will I ever get ?my? life back where I can be more active both physically and socially without my toddler throwing a fit every time?I am having a conversation with an adult, be it a friend or a cashier?

Many thanks in advance.

Sheila

mom blogs, pregnancy, baby ?Get your life back by immediately assuming your role as the parent.? In the best interest of you, your husband, and your toddler begin organizing the family schedule to balance at home and away time.? No matter what you plan or don?t plan, your child is a toddler and most likely will negatively respond to suggestions.? Toddlers play out their stage of development with many demands and rebuttals to your requests.? Toddlers work hard at establishing their sense of self and this is definitely different from yours.? Recognize this milestone and you will be able to earnestly guide your toddler through this stage with remarkable skills.

Although the standard toddler response is ?No!? ?you need to reply with realistic and age-appropriate options.? You might suggest a trip to the market?a realistic choice.? Or, suggest that you spend an hour at the park or the museum, another realistic choice.? Avoid condoning ?doing nothing? unless you and the child are physically unable to travel.? Comfort at home offers toddlers a world that can be controlled and this may justify why your toddler wants to remain there.? However, your parental duty requires you to gently introduce him to other children while broadening his world to include libraries, hiking trails, aquariums, workshops, airports, arboretums, and yes, other children.

Balance your schedule to ensure that you expose him not only to age-appropriate activities but those that are within your expectations.? Avoid pushing ?play dates? on younger than 4+ year-olds.? Your time is best spent broadening his appreciation of the environment and community.? A playgroup for parents and toddlers might be a great way to begin because you will be able to interact with the other adults and your son can begin playing alongside other toddlers.

One last item, focus on preparation for all scheduled activity away from home.? Include your toddler in charting out the week?s plan so he can anticipate the experiences and you can prep him for the sights and sounds.? Children do much better when they have been informed and are prepared to meet people and experience new places.

Baseball great Eddie Murray will settle SEC claims

Baseball Hall of Famer Eddie Murray has agreed to pay $358,151 to resolve US regulatory claims that he reaped illegal profits from an insider-trading scheme involving his former Baltimore Orioles teammate Doug DeCinces.

Murray made $235,314 in profits after Abbott Laboratories said in January 2009 it would acquire Advanced Medical Optics through a tender offer, the Securities and Exchange Commission said yesterday. DeCinces and three others agreed to pay $3.3 million last year to settle SEC claims they reaped a total of $1.7 million, the agency said.

In addition to Murray, 56, who was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2003 as only the third player to collect both 3,000 hits and 500 home runs, the SEC filed claims yesterday in federal court in California against James Mazzo, 55, who was chairman and chief executive officer of Advanced Medical Optics, and David L. Parker, 60, a Utah businessman identified as a friend of DeCinces.

?Mazzo had repeated personal contacts and communications with DeCinces, who promptly traded and tipped Murray, Parker and others that a deal involving Mazzo?s company was imminent,? Daniel M. Hawke, chief of the SEC Enforcement Division?s Market Abuse Unit, said in a statement issued by the agency.

Murray?s lawyer Michael Proctor didn?t immediately respond to a call seeking comment, nor did Richard Marmaro, a lawyer representing Mazzo.

Why China?s Xiaomi is inspiring loyalty that rivals Apple ?fanboys? and Google ?fandroids?

Calling someone an Apple fanboy (or worse, fanboi) or a fandroid is usually meant to be an insult, but supporters of Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi have no trouble calling themselves fans. They may be the new kids on the block, but they?re definitely some of the most loyal.

Xiaomi got its start two years ago with its MIUI skin for Android. Last year, it released its own smartphone, called the Mi-One, and went on to sell over 3.5 million units of the device. The company has also developed a Miliao IM chat service that just?passed the milestone?of 1 million simultaneous online users.

When Xiaomi unveiled its Mi-Two smartphone a few days ago at a high-profile media event in Beijing, more than a thousand of its fans, who call themselves ?mi fen? (??) in Chinese, were in attendance. ?The phrase ?Mi fen? is a pun that?is shorthand for ?Xiaomi fan? and also means ?rice flour?, a clever play off?Xiaomi?s name, which means millet or ?little rice? (??).

Something about the Mi-Two unveiling seemed familiar and the more I thought about it, the more I found similarities between the newly-emerging ?cult of Xiaomi? and fan communities for Apple and Google.

A Charismatic Leader

Co-founder Lei Jun has a charismatic personality that inspires loyalty in his customers in much the same way that the late Steve Jobs did for Apple. Jobs was a masterful orator, and Lei took a few pages from his book for his keynote at the Mi-Two launch. The way in which he kept the audience waiting to hear the price of the new phone (an impressive $315 or RMB 1,999, by the way) was as Jobsian as any Macworld of WWDC keynote I?ve seen.

?

With his black shirt and jeans, Lei even bore a resemblance to Jobs, who was known for wearing a black mock turtleneck and jeans.?Though Lei has resisted the comparison between his preferred outfit, which he says is a plug for Vancl, an ecommerce company he?s an investor in, and Jobs, he has acknowledged that the Apple co-founder was an inspiration to him.

The 43-year-old Lei, whose net worth is believed to be more than $1 billion, formerly served as the CEO at Kingsoft and was one of the co-founders of Joyo, a Chinese ecommerce site that partnered with and was later bought by Amazon. In additional to Vancl, he?s also an investor in several other successful Chinese companies YY and UC Web.

Xiaomi?s similarities to Apple were especially apparent when the company announced a ?1S? upgrade to its first-generation phone. So far, the company appears to be following the single model, multiple generation strategy of the iPhone.

Whether or not Lei himself is willing to make the comparison, his fans certainly have. Forbes notes that some Chinese have taken to calling him ?Lei bu si?, a tongue-in-cheek reference to ?Qiao bu si? the Chinese translation of Jobs? name.

You Say You Want a Revolution

For a company to inspire true loyalty in its customers, it needs a message. Both Apple and Google have had missions that have resonated with their followings, and Xiaomi is no exception. Take for instance, the name of the company, which co-founder Lin Bin says is a reference to a Chinese phrase for revolution.

Politics in are a highly sensitive topic for corporations in China, and Xiaomi has largely steered away from any controversy that could jeopardize its relationship with the central government. It has, however, cultivated a subtly counter-cultural image that appeals to the younger generation.

Why Chinas Xiaomi is inspiring loyalty that rivals Apple fanboys and Google fandroids

Take for instance the Mi-bunny character that the company uses as its mascot. Its red scarf, a reference to the Young Pioneers of China political organization, and its old school communist worker hat evoke Chinese national pride, while the silliness of the rabbit softens the rhetoric and even playfully inverts it.

T-Shirts

T-shirts might sound like an odd reason for arguing the development of a loyal fan base, but in today?s world of hyper-branding, they?re a must. Recognizable t-shirts give users an opportunity to declare their allegiance and adopt the company?s style as their own.

Apple has done this to significant effect. The shirts that employees at its Apple Stores wear have become so iconic that knockoff Apple Stores in China copy them in order to look real.

Meanwhile, the company?s practice of giving out limited edition shirts at (real) retail store openings has also helped build identity among its customers. When the iPad officially launched in China, one man spent two days camping out in front of an Apple Store with a homemade blue shirt that said ?I buy iPad No. 1.?

?

Xiaomi understood the power of the tee at its Mi-Two launch. Employees wore different color shirts depending on their tasks. Not unlike the blue-shirted?clapping gauntlet at Apple Store openings and product launches, orange-shirted greeters formed a line at the entrance to the venue, while workers in black shirts worked to corral media away from Xiaomi?s key executives.?Special Mi-Two launch t-shirts were included in bags given to attendees, so the hall quickly turned into a sea of orange.

?

Graphic t-shirt designs are on sale on Xiaomi?s website to let Mi fans proudly represent. Interestingly, some of the shirts are cheeky, such as the below design where the Mi-bunny is fixing the robot. The company also sells other accessories like dolls and dongles that promote the ?mi fen? culture.

Social Media

Xiaomi has also been active in engaging with its fans on social media like Sina Weibo. It teased the release of the new phone on Weibo and frequently runs promotions on the service giveaways. The company also maintains a Twitter account, but the account doesn?t have a large following there, most likely because?the service is unavailable in China.

Xiaomi Overseas

For now, Xiaomi?s fan base remains largely Chinese, as it has yet to market its phones outside of the country. The company does have international aspirations, though. Engadget recently reported that, according to a source, Xiaomi phones will launch in Europe next year. When that happens, it?ll be interesting to see if Mi fan culture transfers overseas.

Growing beyond China will be an important move for the company, though, since it has billed itself as a low-margin phone maker. Lei revealed at the Mi-Two event that the new phone is being sold at a loss, based on calculations of 3 million devices sold.

?We are not looking to make any money, or to make Xiaomi profitable, for the next two or three years,? Lin said earlier this year.

The company should be set up for the long haul, as it just raised $216 million in a Series D funding round that valued it at $4 billion.

Xiaomi might not be making money yet, but it?s building a loyal fan base that should help the company succeed. And, judging by the photo below of the bathroom sign at the event last week, it?s at least having some fun with it along the way.

Ricard, took family liquor firm global, dies at 67

PARIS (AP) ? Patrick Ricard, who transformed a small firm based on his father's anis-flavored liquor into a global entity with some of the most famous names in alcohol, has died. He was 67.

The company, Pernod Ricard, said in a statement that he died on Friday.

Ricard's father founded the company in 1932 and developed pastis, beloved in France as an aperitif but relatively unknown outside the country. His son joined the company in 1967 and became chairman and CEO in 1978, turning Pernod Ricard into a global brand with the acquisition of some of the world's best-known liquors, including Absolut Vodka, Jameson Irish Whisky and Perrier-Jouet champagne.

Ricard, who was chairman of the board of directors, is survived by his wife and three children.

What Olympic Training has to do with Sales Growth | Business 2 ...

This is the interesting time of the year when we start to see the focus of most Chief Sales Officers expand. In addition to thinking about revenue targets for 2012, we will also begin looking forward to 2013. Over the next few months with input from sales management, the CFO, and the CEO, a new revenue target will emerge.

Based on benchmarking thousands of firms over the past 19 years, let me share with you two things that will result from this process.

First, the 2013 revenue target will be higher than 2012. Why? Because it virtually always increases. Going into this year, 95.5% of the 1,500+ firms CSO Insights surveyed raised revenue goals for 2012, even in the face of economic uncertainty. I see no reason to believe this year?s planning efforts will generate any different results. And by the way, raising revenue goals is not in and of itself a bad thing. But this does lead to my second observation.

In far too many cases, while a great deal of effort will be put into coming up with the new number, far less (if much time at all) will be spent figuring out how the sales teams are going to hit those increased revenue targets. As the Olympics are fresh in our minds, let me share with you a track and field analogy to put this in prospective.

You?re the coach of a high jump team. Half of your athletes can currently clear the bar at 7 feet (which means half can?t). You now tell your team that the qualifying height objective for next year is 7 foot 6 inches. What do you expect to happen? Well if all things remain the same, the athletes who couldn?t clear 7 feet will continue to underperform, and odds are they will be joined by more of the team who are doing everything they can just to clear 7 feet.

As the coach, what should be occurring as the bar is raised is the development of new strategies for how the team is going to achieve that goal. Are there new jumping techniques they can learn? Would yoga increase flexibility? How about changing shoes, etc.?

This brings me to my second point. You want to increase revenues for 2013 by closing more new accounts. What are you going to do to make it easier for your sales people to penetrate those accounts? Or perhaps you want them to cross-sell/up-sell to existing customers. Great idea, now how are reps going to identify which of their existing clients to focus on and what parts of the product line they should present to each of them?

The reason I am bringing this up now is that in addition to figuring out the ?what? for next year, you still have time to figure out the ?how.?

One of the first places many of us look at is the productivity and effectiveness of our sales organizations. CSO Insights recently conducted a survey of more than 200 executives and sales managers to identify top challenges affecting sales departments today. One of the most pressing challenges reported is the onslaught of prospect data they need to sort through. They are overwhelmed by the amount of internal and external data available. It?s like finding a needle in a haystack. Are there ways you can help solve this ?Big Data? problem for them? Can you identify ways to help them better prioritize leads based on their propensity to buy?

My recommendation: For the January 1st email to all our sales reps, where we give them the new target for 2013, let?s also tell them all the things we did in the last months of 2012 to lay the foundation for helping them hit that number. Seriously, start now and 2013 will be a lot more successful.
