Last weekend we got to do a little work on the house ourselves. We ran some speaker wires for surround sound and cat5 cables for data. Thanks to the guys at Isthmus electric for being flexible with my requests for audio, video, and data provisions! They ran tubing so we can pull cables between the TV, DVR and receiver?later. They also ran HDMI cables in the wall, and prepped our office for a wall mounted?monitor/TV. Isthmus even set things up so we could install a heater in the garage and run a compressor or welder circuit later.

Also near the end of last week we signed off on having our lender?release money to the builder for partial construction. Since we are carrying our own construction financing, the bank splits up payments to the builder based on the phase of construction. The lender sends out an inspector to ensure that construction has been completed to the extent that they?d expect for the amount of money that they will release.

Mid week the walls were insulated and all the penetrations got filled with foam (houses are so much better insulated these days than they use to be). Late this week the driveway was poured and siding and drywall began.

In addition to all the excitement listed above, we had our first three change orders. This means that we asked for some changes from the original plans and specs. So, the builder had to add to his fees. Our changes were; countertop edging, a gas line to the garage, and a wider than standard driveway. None of these were absolutely necessary, but we?ve been pinching pennies thus far and we decided to spring for a few more wants rather than wish we had later. No more changes though, hold us to it!

Solar Eclipse Sunday Promises Spectacular Views from China to Texas

Almost all of North America will undergo a weird and dramatic event late Sunday afternoon (May 20). A partial eclipse of the sun will be visible, and for most, it will coincide with sunset.

Only for places northwest of a line running roughly from San Diego to Winnipeg will the eclipse be visible from start to finish before the sun sets. Elsewhere, depending on where you are, if your sky is clear toward the west-northwest, the setting sun will appear slightly dented, deeply crescent-shaped, or even ring-shaped.

The eclipse will begin in China, but in parts of eight western states ? Oregon, California, Nevada, Colorado, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas ? viewers living within a path averaging about 190 miles (306 kilometers) wide, will have a front-row seat to witness the rare and exciting spectacle of an annular solar eclipse, or ring eclipse.? The path of annularity extends from the coastline at the California-Oregon border to northwestern Texas, where it will end at local sunset.?

Places within the path include Medford, Ore.; Eureka, Calif.; Reno, Nev.; Albuquerque, N.M.; and Lubbock, Texas. Also within the path are two beloved national parks, Utah's Bryce Canyon and Arizona?s Grand Canyon. But even if you're not positioned within the track of the ring phase, you shouldn?t get too envious, as the partial eclipse will definitely be a calendar marker most everywhere from the Pacific coast eastward.

Unfortunately for those living to the east of a line running approximately from Panama City, Fla., to Burlington, Vt., the sun will set before the eclipse begins, so those along the heavily populated Eastern Seaboard will miss out on seeing the solar show. Solar eclipse first stop: China

Because the region of visibility straddles the international date line, this solar eclipse seems to begin on the day after it ends. ?The first people to see it will be those in eastern Asia who get up at sunrise on Monday morning, May 21.?

The path of annularity begins in the Gulf of Tongking, to the north-northwest of Hainan Island, the smallest province of the People's Republic of China. The path will quickly move on to the northeast and encompass many densely populated cities such as Guangzhou and Taipei (China), Victoria (Hong Kong) as well as Osaka and Tokyo (Japan).

The moon will then throw its shadow across the Pacific Ocean, cross the date line and toward the latter part of the afternoon of May 20, onto much of North America. The moon will be only about 32 hours past the apogee of its orbit, so it will appear somewhat smaller than usual ? smaller than the disk of the sun.

To be more precise, the moon?s circle will be only about 94.4 percent as wide as the sun; so 2.8 percent of the sun?s width will show on each side of the moon?s silhouette. Therefore, viewers in the shadow?s center will see not a total, but an annular eclipse: the sun will become a brilliant ring (or annulus) of light for up to several minutes encircling the moon?s dark silhouette.?

That brilliant ring will average 1 arc-minute wide. This is as thin as a basketball hoop with a half-inch rim seen face-on from about 160 feet away.? ?

Comprising 12 percent of the area of the solar disk, this ring will blot out the striking phenomena that would otherwise be seen at a total eclipse, such as the corona, prominences and the appearance of stars in a sky.

No doubt for a few hours on Sunday the eclipse almost certainly will top the news, followed of course by the usual dire warnings to the public not to risk blindness by carelessly looking at it. This has given most people the idea that solar eclipses are dangerous. Not so!?

It?s the sun that?s dangerous ? all the time!? Ordinarily, we have no reason to gaze at it. A solar eclipse gives us a reason, but we shouldn?t stare at the sun without taking the proper safety precautions.

Billionaire won't air Obama-Wright campaign ads

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) ? The billionaire said to be weighing a proposal to resurrect incendiary comments by President Barack Obama's former pastor shelved the idea Thursday after Obama and Republican presidential challenger Mitt Romney denounced the tactic.

An aide to Joe Ricketts, founder of TD Ameritrade, said the proposal to draw the Rev. Jeremiah Wright into the presidential campaign ? and the issue of race, by extension ? went too far.

The New York Times reported Thursday that Ricketts' Ending Spending Action Fund, a conservative super PAC, was considering a proposal for a $10 million TV ad campaign highlighting Wright's sermons.

The blueprint, titled "The Defeat of Barack Hussein Obama: the Ricketts Plan to End His Spending For Good," was devised by a group of Republican strategists, one of whom confirmed its contents for The Associated Press on condition of anonymity to discuss private working sessions.

Brian Baker, president of the super PAC, said Ricketts was not the author of the 54-page plan. Baker blamed consultants.

"Not only was this plan merely a proposal ? one of several submitted to the Ending Spending Action Fund by third-party vendors ? but it reflects an approach to politics that Mr. Ricketts rejects and it was never a plan to be accepted but only a suggestion for a direction to take," Baker said in a written statement.

Romney had urged the independent group, which favors his candidacy, to abandon the Wright strategy and to focus instead on his bedrock issue, the economy.

"I repudiate the effort by that PAC to promote an ad strategy of the nature they've described," Romney told the conservative website Townhall.com. "I would like to see this campaign focus on the economy, on getting people back to work, on seeing rising incomes and growing prosperity ? particularly for those in the middle class of America."

Obama campaign manager Jim Messina criticized the plan as a "campaign of character assassination" and accused Romney "reacting tepidly in a moment that required moral leadership in standing up to the very extreme wing of his own party."

Messina noted that Republican Sen. John McCain, Obama's opponent in the 2008 presidential race, had rejected using Wright and Wright's sermons against Obama.

Messina commented before Romney's interview with Townhall.com, and issued no comment after Romney urged Ricketts' group to abandon the effort.

McCain made clear four years ago that he wanted to challenge Obama on his record, not on the words or deeds of those around him, and forbade adviser Fred Davis from incorporating Wright into their advertising plans.

But Davis, a colorful Hollywood consultant, clearly wanted another chance to go use the strategy against Obama.

"Our plan is to do exactly what John McCain would not let us do: Show the world how Barack Obama's opinions of America and the world were formed," Davis' proposal said. "And why the influence of that misguided mentor and our president's formative years among left-wing intellectuals has brought our country to its knees."

Davis' firm said in a statement Thursday that the document ? which called for "hitting Barack right between the eyes" ? was only a proposal and did not win Ricketts' approval.

Wright became a problem for Obama during the 2008 presidential campaign when videos of the pastor's sermons surfaced. In a 2003 sermon, Wright said black people should condemn the United States.

"The government gives them the drugs, builds bigger prisons, passes a three-strike law and then wants us to sing 'God Bless America.' No, no, no, God damn America, that's in the Bible for killing innocent people," Wright said at the time. "God damn America for treating our citizens as less than human. God damn America for as long as she acts like she is God and she is supreme."

Wright, who preached at the Chicago church Obama once attended, became such a distraction for Obama that he ended up delivering a major speech on race relations to try to quell the controversy. He also severed his ties to Wright.

For his part, Arizona Sen. McCain said he had no regrets over his handling of the Wright issue.

"I remain proud of our campaign and proud of what we were able to accomplish, and I would do it over again," McCain told reporters Thursday at the Capitol. He said the matter seemed dead after Romney repudiated the proposal.

He shrugged when asked whether independent groups should take up matters such as Wright's remarks.

"It's a way for political operatives to continue to make money," McCain said.

Another top Republican, House Speaker John Boehner, of Ohio, declined to be drawn into the debate.

"This election is going to be about the economy," he said when reporters asked him to react to the proposed ad campaign. "I don't know what these other people do or why they do it."

Ricketts is the founder of Nebraska-based TD Ameritrade Securities and owner of the Chicago Cubs baseball team. He has been active in conservative politics for years, most recently in Republican Deb Fischer's upset win this week in the Republican Senate primary in Nebraska.
