March deaths Iraq's lowest since 2003
BAGHDAD (AP) ? Official figures showed that 112 people were killed by violence in Iraq in March, the lowest monthly death toll for Iraqis since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003.
The figures compiled by the defense, interior and health ministries were released late Sunday and also showed that 357 were wounded last month.
The total death toll included 78 civilians, 22 policemen and 12 soldiers.
The previous monthly low was in November 2009 when 122 died.
The bloodiest incidents were a series of coordinated attacks in eight Iraqi cities on March 20 as insurgents sought to derail an Arab League meeting in Baghdad. In one day, 46 people were killed and more than 200 wounded.
Despite that, tight security measures that were imposed in advance of the Friday summit appear to have prevented further attacks.
Iraqi officials said that new plans will be put in place in order to ease security measures and to decrease the number of checkpoints in the capital and other cities.
Violence has dropped significantly in Iraq over the past three years, but insurgents often carry out attacks in order to shake confidence on the Shiite-led government.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) ? Diego Maradona's club says the coach did the "honorable thing" by storming into the stands to confront fans who were taunting his girlfriend and the wives of players.
The acting head of the Dubai-based Al Wasl club said on the team website Monday that Maradona's anger was "understandable" and he "did the honorable thing" last weekend. Abdullah al-Bishr also apologized to the Argentina great, who took over as coach last year.
Maradona was restrained Thursday after jostling with fans of rival club Al Shabab who heckled the women during his team's 2-0 loss. Maradona called the Al Shabab fans "cowards."

A league source tells PFT that the current Saints assistants who had been mentioned as potential replacements for coach Sean Payton (offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael Jr., offensive line coach Aaron Kromer, and defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo) aren?t happy with the possibility of an outsider like Parcells swooping in and taking the job.? Carmichael, 40, joined the Saints with Payton in 2006, and Carmichael ran the offense while Payton was relegated to the booth as he recovered from a broken leg.? Kromer, 44, arrived in 2008 and also is in charge of the running game.? Spagnuolo, 52, has three years experience as a head coach, and his Rams delivered one of the three regular-season losses endured last year by the Saints.
